English

Subject field(s)
  • Medical and Surgical Equipment
  • Injections, Tubing and Transfusions (Medicine)
DEF

A hollow cylindrical instrument fitted with a piston or compressible bulb device such that liquids may be drawn in by creating suction and forcibly expelled as desired, and utilized for injection, withdrawal, or transfer of fluids.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Équipement médico-chirurgical
  • Injections, tubages et transfusions (Médecine)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diesel Motors
  • Engines (Motor Vehicles)
CONT

In an indirect injection diesel engine, fuel is injected into a small prechamber which is connected to the cylinder by a narrow opening. The initial combustion takes place in this prechamber. This has the effect of slowing the rate of combustion, which tends to reduce audible noise. In a direct injection diesel engine, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. The piston incorporates a depression(often toroidal) which is where initial combustion takes place. Direct injection diesel engines are generally more efficient than indirect injection engines, but have a tendency to produce greater amounts of audible noise. In either case the location where combustion takes place, called a swirl chamber, is carefully designed to ensure adequate mixing of the atomized fuel with the compression-heated air.

Domaine(s)
  • Moteurs diesel
  • Moteur (Véhicules automobiles)
CONT

Le fonctionnement du moteur Diesel à injection directe est entièrement basé sur l'auto-allumage du combustible dans l'air fortement chauffé par la compression.

On écrirait mieux «diésel».

OBS

diésel : Cette graphie, puisée des Rectifications de l'orthographe recommandées par le Conseil supérieur de la langue française, est attestée dans le Petit Robert (2004).

Record 3 2004-12-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Engines (Motor Vehicles)
OBS

Direct injection(DI) refers to fuel injected directly into the combustion chamber above the piston. Direct injection has long been used on large diesel engines. Smaller diesels are increasingly adopting direct injection(vs. indirect injection into a pre-chamber). Direct injection also can be used in spark ignition(generally gasoline) engines instead of port fuel injection-for cleaner emissions, increased full throttle power and potentially for lean-burn operation.

Key term(s)
  • direct-injection engine

French

Domaine(s)
  • Moteur (Véhicules automobiles)
DEF

Moteur à combustion interne dans lequel le carburant est injecté sous pression directement dans la chambre de combustion.

OBS

À noter que les moteurs à injection directe peuvent utiliser du diesel ou de l'essence.
