Foams are relatively new forms of polymer-based materials. They are light in weight and versatile, and are employed increasingly in a variety of applications that include thermal and acoustic insulation, core materials for sandwich panels, fabrication of furniture and flotation materials. ... A plastic foam material consists of a gas phase dispersed in a solid plastic phase and derives its properties from both. The solid plastic component forms the matrix. The gas phase is contained in voids or cells. ... The term cellular plastic, a synonym for plastic foam, is derived from the structure of the material. Foams are classified as open-cell or closed-cell. In closed-cell foams each cell (more or less spherical in shape) is completely enclosed by a thin wall or membrane of plastic, whereas in open-cell foams the individual cells are interconnected. 4, record 6, English, - cellular%20plastic

The terms plastic foam, foamed plastic and cellular plastic are used interchangeably; they refer to foamed plastics regardless of cell structure (open or closed). Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT

Thixomolded parts, like molded plastic parts, are finished right out of the mold. Compounding, debinding, and sintering steps are not required, as they are in PIM [plastic injection molding]. And, unlike PIM, Thixomolding can be used to mold much bigger IMMC parts, using much bigger molding machines, such as those over 500 tons. Thixomolding is used to mold net-shape parts out of metal alloys that are traditionally used in die-casting metal alloys like magnesium. In many regards, this IMMC process is very similar to the single-step plastics injection molding process. Still, there are differences in the Thixomolding machines, as well as in the Thixomolding materials. 2, record 7, English, - Thixomolding%C2%AE

The manufacture of foamed plastics products involves slightly different forming processes than those described above. The three types of foam plastic are blown, syntactic, and structural. Blown foam is an expanded matrix, similar to a natural sponge; syntactic foam is the encapsulation of hollow organic or inorganic micro spheres in the plastic matrix; and structural foam is a foamed core surrounded by a solid outer skin. All three types of foam plastic can be produced using processes such as injection, extrusion, and compression molding to create foam products in many of the same shapes as solid plastics products. The difference is that creating foam products requires processes such as the addition of chemical blowing agents, different mixing processes which add air to the plastic matrix, or a unique injection molding process used to make structural plastic. 1, record 11, English, - blown%20foam

CFCs and HCFCs are used in the manufacture of some blown plastic foams which are termed either rigid or flexible. Rigid plastic foams are mainly used in insulation but are also used for packaging material and as filler. Flexible foams are primarily used for articles such as upholstered furniture, car seats and mattresses. ... In rigid insulation foams, the CFCs and HCFCs are retained to improve insulation. In nonrigid foams the blowing agent is not fully retained. 2, record 11, English, - blown%20foam

3, record 12, English, - structural%20foam

In a modern injection molding machine, the pellets are conveyed forward within the barrel by a rotating screw, and melt as they go. The molten plastic is deposited at the forward end of the barrel, displacing the screw backward. When enough material has been plasticized, a hydraulic cylinder pushes the screw forward, forcing the molten plastic ahead of it through a nozzle, sprue, runners, and a narrow gate into a water-cooled mold cavity, where the molten plastic solidifies. 2, record 15, English, - injection%20machine

Another process somewhat related to injection blow-molding is dip blow molding used for small containers. The process has the advantage of reducing some of the molded-in stress. A core rod is inserted into a cupel, displacing resin and packing it into the neck finish area. As the core rod moves away, a predetermined amount of resin is permitted to remain on the rod. A hot knife cuts the hot plastic, separating the material on the rod from the melt pool in the cupel. The core rod is then rotated to the blow station for blow molding. Hesta is a supplier of this type of machinery. 3, record 16, English, - dip%20blow%20molding

Another process somewhat related to extrusion blow molding is the extrusion/molded neck process. Still used today by Owens-Illinois, this is a proprietary process that traces its roots to glass-blowing technology. It is unique in that the bottle neck finish is injection molded and the bottle body is extrusion blow-molded. In this process, the two halves of a neck finish cavity or neckring are mounted to an actuating head assembly, which intermeshes with the two halves of the blow-mold cavity. The process cycle begins with the main body mold cavity open and the neckring cavity closed. The actuating head assembly moves downward to contact the extrusion die head. When it is in position, extrusion pressure fills the neck section with plastic melt. After it is held for one to two seconds, the head assembly moves upward while, simultaneously, the parison is extruded. When the head assembly reaches the top of its stroke, the blow-mold cavity closes on the parison. The remaining steps of parison pinch-off, blowing, and part removal all follow conventional techniques. Although the production cycle is somewhat slow, the process offers the quality advantage of an accurately molded neck and the process advantage of a parison held at both ends. 1, record 17, English, - extrusion%20molded%20neck%20blow%2Dmolding%20process
