Some individuals with a high level spinal cord injury(SCI), usually above the T6 level, experience a reflex condition known as autonomic dysreflexia in their daily lives. Some athletes with spinal cord injury may voluntarily induce autonomic dysreflexia, which is commonly called boosting, to improve their performance.

Une technique spécifique de dopage : le boosting. Il s'agit de l'activation délibérée de l'hyper-réflexie autonome des blessés médullaires dont la lésion est située au-dessus de D7. Cette activation est entraînée par une stimulation cutanée ou viscérale, le plus souvent nociceptive, dans le territoire sous lésionnel. Cette activation entraîne une élévation de la pression artérielle de l'athlète. Il est impossible de distinguer si la réaction résulte du boosting ou de la survenue inopinée de phénomène d'hyper-réflexie autonome.

CONT

Il n'y a que les athlètes tétraplégiques et quelques rares paraplégiques qui peuvent avoir recours au boosting pour améliorer leurs performances. Sommairement, il s'agit de blesser une partie paralysée du corps afin de créer un vif réflexe de protection, destiné à alerter la personne handicapée du fait que quelque chose ne va pas dans la zone insensible. Ce phénomène se nomme la dysréflexie, ou hyper-réflexie autonome.

OBS

Cette pratique est considérée dangereuse, contraire à l'éthique et illégale par le comité international paralympique. Un examen médical peut donc être réalisé à tout moment d'une compétition, lors de la procédure d'appel ou de la phase d'échauffement, par exemple (prise de tension artérielle, rythme cardiaque, recherche d'érythème cutané, frissons, chair de poule, dyspnée, anxiété, tremblements). En cas de suspicion, l'athlète est réexaminé après une dizaine de minutes. La commission médicale peut alors être amenée à considérer l'athlète comme présentant un risque et à suspendre sa participation à la compétition concernée.
