Water transfer printing... is a surface decorating process with which elaborate graphics – such as wood grain, carbon fiber, camouflage, geometrical designs, etc. – are applied to a 3D [three-dimensional] product surface.... The process utilizes a water-soluble film that contains the printed patterns. The film dissolves in the water and leaves the ink on the surface. In the typical process, the item to be printed is first coated with a primer or an adhesion promoter. After this dries, a base coat paint is applied to control the hue of the pattern. For instance, wood grain prints often utilize a brown base coat, and many camouflage patterns use a neutral base. After the base coat is applied, the item is ready for decorating. The film is activated using a chemical activator. The item then is dipped into the water, and the ink wraps around it. 5, record 1, English, - hydrographics

[An] electronic [device] that increases the adhesion properties of a substrate [by modifying its] surface energy... to make it more compatible with ink, adhesives or coatings. 3, record 2, English, - corona%20treatment%20system
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
A corona is generated by applying a high-frequency high-voltage signal to an electrode, which is separated from a grounded surface by an air gap and a dielectric. No current will pass through the air gap until there is enough voltage to affect the electrical breakdown of the air, typically 3,000 to 5,000 volts per millimeter. The corona treatment of the substrate results from the bombardment and penetration of these ions into the molecular structure at the surface of the substrate. It is the oxidation and polar-group formation in the surface molecules, in conjunction with the etching of the surface from the ion bombardment that induces the increase in surface energy of the treated material. 3, record 2, English, - corona%20treatment%20system

Pigmented inks contain other agents that ensure adhesion of the pigment to the surface and prevent it from being removed by mechanical abrasion. These materials are typically referred to as resins(in solvent-based inks) or binding agents(in water-based inks). Pigmented inks are advantageous when printing on paper because the pigment stays on the surface of the paper. This is desirable because more ink on the surface of the paper means less ink needs to be used to create the same intensity of color. 3, record 3, English, - pigmented%20ink

L'encre pigmentaire permet d'imprimer un texte plus foncé, plus net avec des couleurs qui ne s'atténuent pas. It usually occurs on coated paper and when the printed ink is slow to dry. It is usually due to low ratio of dried ink binder to ink pigment at the print surface.
