INK ADHESION [8 records]

  • Printing Processes - Various
CONT

Water transfer printing... is a surface decorating process with which elaborate graphics – such as wood grain, carbon fiber, camouflage, geometrical designs, etc. – are applied to a 3D [three-dimensional] product surface.... The process utilizes a water-soluble film that contains the printed patterns. The film dissolves in the water and leaves the ink on the surface. In the typical process, the item to be printed is first coated with a primer or an adhesion promoter. After this dries, a base coat paint is applied to control the hue of the pattern. For instance, wood grain prints often utilize a brown base coat, and many camouflage patterns use a neutral base. After the base coat is applied, the item is ready for decorating. The film is activated using a chemical activator. The item then is dipped into the water, and the ink wraps around it.

OBS

DEF

[An] electronic [device] that increases the adhesion properties of a substrate [by modifying its] surface energy... to make it more compatible with ink, adhesives or coatings.

OBS

A corona is generated by applying a high-frequency high-voltage signal to an electrode, which is separated from a grounded surface by an air gap and a dielectric. No current will pass through the air gap until there is enough voltage to affect the electrical breakdown of the air, typically 3,000 to 5,000 volts per millimeter. The corona treatment of the substrate results from the bombardment and penetration of these ions into the molecular structure at the surface of the substrate. It is the oxidation and polar-group formation in the surface molecules, in conjunction with the etching of the surface from the ion bombardment that induces the increase in surface energy of the treated material.

DEF

An ink using pigments, but typically also using a dye component in the mix to help keep the colours rich and the pigment in suspension.

CONT

Pigmented inks contain other agents that ensure adhesion of the pigment to the surface and prevent it from being removed by mechanical abrasion. These materials are typically referred to as resins(in solvent-based inks) or binding agents(in water-based inks). Pigmented inks are advantageous when printing on paper because the pigment stays on the surface of the paper. This is desirable because more ink on the surface of the paper means less ink needs to be used to create the same intensity of color.

DEF

Do not print in the glue flap. This is crucially important when gluing a U. V. varnished job because the adhesion of the varnish to underlying ink is usually the weakest part of the joint and failure is likely at this point. The bond of varnish to board is much stronger than that of varnish to ink.

DEF

A printing fault in which the vehicle and pigment separate after printing, leaving unbound pigments on the surface of the paper.

OBS

It usually occurs on coated paper and when the printed ink is slow to dry. It is usually due to low ratio of dried ink binder to ink pigment at the print surface. Causes may be an improperly prepared ink, too thin an ink or too absorbent a paper. In most cases the adhesion improves during the final stages of ink drying.

TYUEK spun bonded olesin is a 100% polyethylene fibre. It has been corona treated on both sides to improve ink adhesion.

OBS

Corona discharge : Discharge caused by ionization of a gas surrounding a conductor, which occurs when the potential gradient exceeds a certain value but is not sufficient to cause sparking. Before printing in the screen process, polyethylene needs to be pre-treated to obtain good ink adhesion. This is usually done by exposing the surface to a corona discharge.
