Water transfer printing... is a surface decorating process with which elaborate graphics – such as wood grain, carbon fiber, camouflage, geometrical designs, etc. – are applied to a 3D [three-dimensional] product surface.... The process utilizes a water-soluble film that contains the printed patterns. The film dissolves in the water and leaves the ink on the surface. In the typical process, the item to be printed is first coated with a primer or an adhesion promoter. After this dries, a base coat paint is applied to control the hue of the pattern. For instance, wood grain prints often utilize a brown base coat, and many camouflage patterns use a neutral base. After the base coat is applied, the item is ready for decorating. The film is activated using a chemical activator. The item then is dipped into the water, and the ink wraps around it. 5, record 1, English, - hydrographics

Albertype was an early version of the collotype process, utilized for printing photographic reproductions in quantity. The various collotype processes were employed commercially from the latter part of the 19th century to the mid 20th century, and were especially suited to reproducing watercolors because of the grain they produced. Eventually these processes were replaced by offset lithography. 4, record 7, English, - collotype%20printing

Thermal ink-transfer printers have found applications in many fields due to their small size, quiet operation, high-quality printing, and low maintenance. The recording medium of these printers is hot-melt ink coated on a film substrate. Thermal energy from the print head causes the ink to melt and transfer to the paper. This design makes the print quality highly dependent on the properties of the ink.(Term and concept taken from the INSPEC data base). 2, record 40, English, - hot%2Dmelt%20ink
