Dérivée de l'imprimante à marguerite, l'imprimante à tulipe utilise une roue dont les «pétales» sont pliés à 90°. Il s'ensuit une plus grande compacité de l'ensemble et la possibilité de mettre 2 caractères au bout de chaque pétale (un seul sur une marguerite), le passage de l'un à l'autre des caractères d'un même pétale se faisant par montée et descente de la tête d'impression. Comparativement à la marguerite, l'impression avec une tulipe est plus rapide et le nombre de caractères par roue est plus important.

To print a character, the printer rotates the disk until the desired letter is facing the paper. Then a hammer strikes the disk, forcing the character to hit an ink ribbon, leaving an impression of the character on the paper.
