Water transfer printing... is a surface decorating process with which elaborate graphics – such as wood grain, carbon fiber, camouflage, geometrical designs, etc. – are applied to a 3D [three-dimensional] product surface.... The process utilizes a water-soluble film that contains the printed patterns. The film dissolves in the water and leaves the ink on the surface. In the typical process, the item to be printed is first coated with a primer or an adhesion promoter. After this dries, a base coat paint is applied to control the hue of the pattern. For instance, wood grain prints often utilize a brown base coat, and many camouflage patterns use a neutral base. After the base coat is applied, the item is ready for decorating. The film is activated using a chemical activator. The item then is dipped into the water, and the ink wraps around it.

Cell angle-Anilox cells are engraved in a linear pattern, and at various angles. Typical anilox cell angles are 30 °, 45 °, and 60 °. It is important to understand that the screen angle of the printing plate and the cell angle of the anilox roll can combine to cause an objectionable moiré pattern, even if only one-color halftones are being printed... While an anilox cell angle may be selected to help avoid moiré, the problem of moiré is usually avoided by angling the separation screens. Research and experience has shown that the 60 ° angle allows for more complete ink transfer, and is becoming the preferred cell angle for flexographic printers.

Achievements in doctor blade technology have resulted in high quality flexographic printing and pollution prevention through controlled ink transfer from the ink container to the substrate. The average two-roll system with its ink fountain, fountain roller and anilox roll is a veritable open reservoir, exposing large quantities of solvents that are readily evaporated. The chambered doctor blade halts this evaporation. Ink enters the chamber from the reservoir or ink sump by a pump. The ink is held in the manifold area, with a small area exposed to the anilox roll. A doctor blade is positioned to shear off the excess ink as the anilox turns, returning all extra ink to the chamber. A second plastic or metal blade retains the ink within the chamber. The chamber is sealed off completely so that no ink goes beyond the width of the unit.

The surface of the anilox roller is defined by the cell wall ratio and the separation of the individual cells by the cell wall, in general a high ratio should be the target. The better the demarcation of the cell through the land areas, the more regular is the successful inking of the image particularly of fine printing elements. Firmin Gillot, ouvrier lithographe, mit au point en 1850 un procédé nouveau. C'était le décalque d'un dessin lithographique, avec toutes ses finesses de trait et de pointillés, sur une planche de zinc qu'il mordait ensuite à l'acide. Il obtenait ainsi un cliché typographique reproduisant le dessin de l'artiste.

Ce procédé, qu'il appela panéiconographie, connut rapidement une grande extension sous le vocable plus répandu de gillotage.
