enclosed sea: The term "enclosed sea" ... should not be confused with the term "closed sea." An enclosed sea was not a fully closed sea much as the Caspian Sea or the Aral Sea, which had no outlets to the open oceans. It was, instead, a small body of inland water, such as the Persian Gulf or the Baltic Sea, which had at least one outlet to the open sea.

A computerized database of aerial survey results, this information holding is summarized by sector within each country using dBASE III Plus. Sector surveys were numbered consecutively(1 to 763) in a clockwise fashion by country around the continent, and their lengths calculated from aeronautical charts(scale 1 : 1, 000, 000). Records for each survey sector contain species counts, sector lengths, and "eco-unit" designation which defines a geographical entity of broadly similar habitat. Principle habitats in each survey sector are described and classified in intertidal, near-shore and inland zones(where appropriate). For regional analyses, eco-units are grouped into three main regions : North Coast, Atlantic Coast and Pacific Coast. Each survey sector segment has been identified on the Western Hemispheric coverage derived from the 1 : 1, 000, 000 Digital Chart of the World(DCW).

Cette base de données informatisée des résultats des relevés aériens est organisée par pays et par secteur à l'intérieur de chaque pays; elle utilise le logiciel dBASE III Plus. Les secteurs étudiés ont été numérotés consécutivement (de 1 à 763) dans le sens horaire des pays du continent, et leur longueur a été calculée à l'aide de cartes aéronautiques (échelle de 1/1 000 000). Les données recueillies pour chaque secteur comprennent les dénombrements par espèce, la longueur du secteur et la désignation de l'unité écologique qui définit une entité géographique représentant un habitat à peu près similaire. Les habitats principaux de chaque secteur de relevé sont décrits et classés en zones intertidale, littorale et terrestre (le cas échéant). Aux fins des analyses régionales, les unités écologiques sont regroupées en trois régions principales : côte nord, côte de l'Atlantique et côte du Pacifique. Chaque segment de secteur de relevé a été identifié sur la portion de la carte mondiale numérique (échelle de 1/1 000 000) portant sur l'hémisphère occidental.

... the future expansion programme of each of the surface transport modes in providing transport services depends crucially on government policy and investment decisions keeping in view the past transport development trend and the recently changed scenario in the transport sector. Modal shares of three surface transports-road, inland water way and railway in 1997(estimated on the basis of 1993 and 1996 data) are 72 per cent, 17 per cent and 11 per cent respectively for passengers and 65 per cent, 28 per cent and 7 per cent respectively for freight.
