A small underground box, usually of metal and concrete, to which surface water is directed. The drop inlet in turn directs water into an adjoining conduit. 5, record 1, English, - inlet
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Catch basins have a sump area below the outflow pipe that enables sediment to be collected, whereas drain inlets lead directly to the outflow pipe. The advantage of the catch basin over the drain inlet is that, although the sump must be cleaned out periodically, a catch basin will cause less sedimentation in the drainage system. This reduces the problem of clogged and damaged drainage pipes, which are much more difficult and expensive to maintain than the sump portion of a catch basin. 6, record 1, English, - inlet
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Inlets are of three general types: curb inlets, gutter inlets, and combination inlets .... 1, record 1, English, - inlet

Gutter inlets are more efficient than curb inlets in capturing gutter flow, but clogging by debris is a problem. 7, record 1, English, - inlet

Two current designs of air-cushioned headbox are illustrated in Figures 16-8 and 16-9. These boxes depend on the action of the rotating, perforated rolls to provide turbulence and level out velocity gradients. Shower sprays are arranged to cover the pond and sides of the box. Some older designs... incorporate a reception chamber(also called "swirl chamber" or "explosion chamber") into which the distribution system feeds, followed by an adjustable gap or throat. The gap is important; if too large, the high velocity streams from the inlet pipes will persist; if too small, troublesome vortices(eddy currents) can be created. 1, record 3, English, - swirl%20chamber

1, record 3, French, - chambre%20de%20tourbillonnement
