INLET STAGE [11 records]

Record 1 2008-01-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
CONT

Two-stage line-type hydraulic system filters are being used in some recent aircraft models. The typical two-stage filter has two filter elements, two bypass valves, and two differential pressure indicators. The first-stage element can filter out smaller particles than the second-stage element can. Normally, the fluid passes through both elements, flowing first through the first stage element. As long as the first stage element is unclogged and functioning, there will be no foreign matter left for the second-stage element to remove. However, if the first-stage element becomes clogged, its bypass valve opens and fluid goes directly from the filter inlet port to the second-stage element, which then takes over the job of filtering out foreign particles.

OBS

two-stage filter (Boeing 727); dual element filter, dual filter (Douglas).

Subject field(s)
  • Compressors
CONT

A four stage compressor unit comprises four different compressor elements and four separate electric motors with an adjustable speed. It also comprises pistons in series. The outlet of a compressor element of one lower stage is connected to the inlet of a successive compressor element of a successive higher stage. The mass flow rate is constant in each of the stage. The optimum efficiency of the compressor unit is obtained by optimizing the speed of each stage and, therefore, the pressure ratio over each stage.

Magnetometer and riometer array(MARIA). MARIA will ultimately consist of an array of 12 magnetometers and riometers. At each MARIA location, it is proposed that telluric(ie, induced earth currents) measurements be made. In the early stage of operation, MARIA will consist of seven stations located approximately along a geomagnetic meridian running through Churchill, Manitoba and extending from Rankin Inlet. At a later stage, it is planned that the line will be expanded to an array, consisting of an additional three stations located approximately 30 degrees west of the Churchill line, and another two stations aligned longitudinally to give a roughly H-shaped configuration.

DEF

A well connected with the main stream in such a way as to permit the measurement of the stage in relatively still liquid. [definition standardized by ISO]

CONT

A stilling well is an enclosed structure sunk into the bank of the stream and connected to the stream by means of an inlet pipe. The well eliminates problems associated with measurements of stage when there is debris in the stream or where the stream is very turbulent.

CONT
