INNER FACE [28 records]

Record 1 2026-03-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Submarines (Naval Forces)
  • Torpedoes
DEF

A domed steel door at the outer end of a torpedo tube located in the bow of a submarine.

CONT

Bow caps... This is a circular steel door with a... sealing ring held in a groove in its inner face by a retaining ring and set bolts. The sealing ring bears against the lip-end when the bow-cap is shut.

CONT

The outer end of the [torpedo] tube is sealed with a domed bow cap. Bow shutters close across the bow caps to preserve the streamlined shape of the bow when the cap is closed. The bow caps and shutters are mechanically linked to a hydraulically operated drive rod from within the torpedo compartment. The bow cap opens first behind the shutter, which then folds back against it forming a smooth exit tube.

OBS

A door usually found in an Oberon-class submarine.

Subject field(s)
  • Pipes and Fittings
CONT

In small sizes, the compression fitting is composed of an outer compression nut and an inner compression ring or ferrule(sometimes referred to as an "olive") that is typically made of brass or copper. Ferrules vary in shape and material but are most commonly in the shape of a ring with beveled edges. To work properly, the ferrule must be oriented correctly – usually the ferrule is fitted such that the longest sloping face of the ferrule faces away from the nut.

OBS

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tuyauterie et raccords
DEF

OBS

CONT

A secondary bow with colors reversed so that the red edge is toward the inner border is frequently seen about 8 degrees outside the primary bow. It is weaker than the primary bow because the light undergoes two reflections, and consequently more absorption, inside the raindrops.

DEF

The part of a compass on which the direction graduations are placed, it is usually in the form of a thin disk or annulus graduated in degrees, clockwise from 0° at the reference direction to 360°, and sometimes also in compass points.

CONT

The heading indicator(also known as the directional gyro) is an instrument designed to indicate the heading of the airplane... The gyro wheel in the heading indicator is mounted vertically and spins about its horizontal axis... The spinning gyro wheel is mounted in an inner gimbal ring that is free to turn about the horizontal axis. The inner ring is, in turn, mounted inside an outer gimbal ring. The compass rose card on the face of the instrument is attached by a series of gears to the outer gimbal ring. As the airplane turns, the compass card rotates indicating a turn to the left or right.

CONT

The dial on a compass is called a card. The compass card has 360 points, called degrees. The dial will help you to find East, West, South and all the points in between. The numbers on the dial show the number of degrees from North.

Ce cardan est monté à l'intérieur d'un autre cardan. Le limbe (rose graduée du compas) visible sur la face de l'instrument, est attaché au cardan extérieur par un système d'engrenages.
