INNER FLAME [6 records]

Record 1 1996-10-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Equipment (Chemistry)
DEF

[In flame spectroscopy], a burner in which fuel and oxidant are thoroughly mixed inside the burner housing before they leave the burner ports and enter the primary-combustion or inner zone of the flame. This type of burner usually produces an approximately laminar flame, and is commonly combined with a separate unit for nebulizing the sample.

CONT

The second type of burner, used in most commercial instruments, is the premix chamber burner, sometimes called the laminar-flow burner. ... The fuel and support gases are mixed in a chamber before they enter the burner head (through a slot) where they combust. The sample solution is again aspirated through a capillary by the "Venturi effect" using the support gas for the aspiration. Large droplets of the sample condense and drain out of the chamber. The remaining fine droplets mix with the gases and enter the flame. As much as 90% of the droplets condense out, leaving only 10% to enter the flame.

DEF

CONT

Soft, Lazy Flame. This condition appears only when just enough primary air is admitted to the burner to cause the yellow tips to disappear. The inner cone and the outer envelope will not be as clearly defined as they are in the correct, blue flame. This type of flame is best for high-low operation. It is not suitable, however, wherever there may be a shortage of secondary air. This flame will burn blue in the open air; however, when it touches a cooler surface, soot will be deposited on that surface.

CONT

Subject field(s)

CONT

the blue flame was produced by blowing primary air into the base of the flame.

CONT

Sharp, Blue Flame. When the proper ratio of gas to air is maintained, there will be a sharp, blue flame. Both the outer envelope and the inner cone will be pointed and the sides will be straight. the flame will be resting on the burner ports and there will not be any noticeable blowing noise. The flame will ignite smoothly on demand from the thermostat. Also, it will burn with a nonluminous flame. This is the most desirable flame for heating purposes on standard heating units.

CONT

Brûleurs à flamme bleue. (...)
