Inertial platform ... Stable platforms utilizing gyroscopes references have been successfully used for several decades as attitude and heading reference systems (AHRS), fire control baselines for aircraft, ships, missiles, and for inertial navigators. The part of the platform system, which mechanizes the reference is called "controlled member" or "stable element". 2, record 1, English, - controlled%20member

For a three-gimbal platform... the inner gimbal or controlled member is the stable platform on which the three gyros and accelerometers are mounted. As the vehicle to which the system is attached moves, the gyros sense any rotation and drive the gimbals in the opposite direction to null the gyro rate. As a result, the inner platform remains fixed in inertial space. 5, record 1, English, - controlled%20member

1, record 1, French, - cardan%20interne

Gyroscopes can be used as devices for direction finding, guidance, and control. If a gyroscope, mounted on its gimbal rings, is set spinning about a horizontal axis, and the outer gimbal ring is rotated in a horizontal plane, then the inner gimbal ring, carrying the flywheel, tilts up out of the horizontal plane in which it, too first lay. After a few oscillations, damped out by friction, the axis of spin of the gyroscope settles down along a vertical direction. Inertial guidance systems make use of very similar phenomena. Once a gyroscope has been set spinning about a chosen axis, any motion that would cause it to deviate from this direction calls into existence a torque that can be used as an error signal to control corrective maneuvers... Some of the most important applications of gyroscopic phenomena are in aircraft instruments. A free(perfectly balanced) gyroscope can give a constant indication of a chosen reference direction for checking the correct course, and a gravitationally loaded gyroscope can be used to identify the true vertical at all times and so define an artificial horizon against which the pilot can measure the angles of bank and climb. 2, record 4, English, - gyroscopic%20phenomenon

2, record 4, French, - ph%C3%A9nom%C3%A8ne%20gyroscopique

Gimbal lock is peculiar to a three-axis, three gimbal platform. In this condition, two of the gimbals become aligned when the elevation angle, say [theta], reaches 90°.

The first type of gyroscopic instrument to successfully reduce gimbal bearing friction to an acceptable level for precision applications was the floated gyroscope. In this instrument the rotating member is sealed within a hollow cylinder which forms the inner gimbal of the gyro. This is mounted in the gyro case with a fluid surrounding the cylinder; the density of the fluid is chosen so as to exactly float the cylinder, thus removing the weight of the inner gimbal from the bearings and greatly relieving the bearing frictional load. 1, record 15, English, - gimbal%20bearing%20friction
