CONT

Low-emissivity glass (or low-e glass ... ) is a type of energy-efficient glass designed to prevent heat escaping through your windows to the cold outdoors.

CONT

All clear glass used is low energy glass. This means that more heat comes in through the glass than goes out. The inner layer of glass is treated with a special coating that reflects heat back into the room.

CONT

Eppley Precision Spectral Pyranometer, PSP. This instrument is considered to be the most accurate radiometer produced commercially for the measurement of global sun and sky radiation, totally or in defined wavelength bands. It can be inverted to measure reflected shortwave radiation(from which the albedo can be calculated). The PSP has a circular multi-junction thermopile of the plated(copper-constantan) wire wound type which is temperature compensated in order to get a response that is independent of ambient temperature. The temperature sensed by the detector is nearly linear with the flux density of incident radiation. The instrument is supplied with a pair of removable precision ground and polished concentric hemispheres of Schott optical glass. The inner hemisphere is transparent to a wavelength of 0. 285-2. 800 µm. The outer dome can be replaced by Schott glass hemispherical filters which transmit within specified bandwidths. Desiccant is placed in the side of the instrument to absorb humidity inside the glass domes. Measurements are reported in Wm-2.

CONT

The Eppley PSP (or simply Eppley Pyranometer) is an instrument for the measurement of radiation in the range approximately between 285 and 2800 nm. As noted earlier, this wavelength range is commonly referred to as shortwave radiation, and it’s primary source is the sun.

CONT

Dr. Stookey [chemist] continued to find new uses for glass. Among them, the discovery of machinable glass, and polychromatic glass that produced full-color images when exposed to light and heat.

CONT

There are two layers of glass mounted in each wall section. The outer layer is thick glass onto which text and graphics have been etched. The inner layer of glass is specially manufactured polychromatic glass, also known as LCD glass due to the layer of liquid crystal diode film that is laminated between two sheets of standard glass. When a small amount of electrical current is applied to the LCD film, it changes instantly from opaque to transparent, a feature that has been used to great effect in a number of other installations.

  • Acoustics (Physics)
CONT

Modul Couped Sash Windows have been designed to offer the highest levels of acoustic performance without recourse to expensive special glass or gasfilled sealed units. The most efficient and cost-effective way of achieving good noise insulation lies in the introduction of a large air void between inner and outer glazing panes. Modul windows achieve an air gap of typically 55mm to 85mm between the inner and outer sashes and this expanse permits sound reduction levels of up to Rw 45dB to be met using only standard 6mm and 4mm panes of glass.

CONT

... the powder magazine. Up to 65 barrels of powder for the guns were stored here. The alcove where the lamp is located is called a light closet. This closet would have had 5 or 6 plates of glass or mica, so that if one should break, the powder would not be exposed to an open flame.

OBS

By the use of double doors the interior of the magazine was never in direct contact with the rest of the building. To give light an aperture about two feet square went through the magazine's brick wall about five feet from the floor to a closet off the corridor. This aperture was fitted with a movable pane of glass, flush with the inner wall of the magazine, with a large sill behind it entirely cut off from the magazine. A burning lantern placed on the sill shone through the glass into the magazine without any risk of danger....

OBS

The context and the first observation of this record apply respectively to the Murney Tower gunpowder and the Market Shoal Tower.

Resin Anchored Bolts.(...) It has been found that the use of resins will increase significantly the holding ability of expansion anchors. Two types of resin packages are available. In one type, the resin and catalyst are at opposite ends of a plastic envelope separated by a clip. The clip is removed and the package kneaded to mix the components. Then the package is thrust up the hole and a bolt with a mechanical anchor is inserted; in tightening the package will burst and the resin will ooze around the anchor. The other type is a glass capsule where resin and quartz granulars are contained in an outer glass capsule and the catalyst is in an inner tube.(...) Bolt ends need no threading for this anchorage.
