The outer protection of a composite or combination packaging together with any absorbent materials, cushioning and any other components necessary to contain and protect inner receptacles or inner packagings.

CONT

The inner packagings must be separated from the outer packaging by a gap of not less than 25 mm filled with cushioning material, e. g. sawdust, wood wool.

OBS

Do not confuse with "overwrapping" or "overpack," in French: "suremballage," which designate a non-reusable enclosure used by a single consignor to consolidate two or more packages for convenience in handling, and which consists of a variation of bundle-wrapping wherein identical products are arranged or collated into multiples of 2-, 6-, 10- or 12-pack units and overwrapped, the overwrapping being accomplised by a machine called an "overwrapper."

A container that carries a quantity of material which is in a free-flowing liquid or dry state and contained within industrial packaging without the use of inner containers.

CONT

Intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), also called semibulk containers, are larger than conventional drums and heavy-duty shipping bags but smaller than a bulk vehicle (eg. a tanker truck). One of its major distinguishing features is the absence of protrusions (eg, bilges) for manual handling. It is, by definition, designed for mechanical handling ... IBCs contain the product directly, unlike box pallets ... which generally contain packaged products. IBCs are available in many different materials. Those that carry solids are generally made of rigid or collapsible metal, rigid plastics; corrugated paperboard; wood or reconstituted wood; heavy-duty coated fabric; or plastic-tape fabric. Those that carry liquids are generally made of rigid metal; rigid plastic; corrugated paperboard; or flexible materials (eg, rubber-coated fabric, or polyurethane film).

There must be neither leakage from, nor serious rupture of, any of the tested drums or of the inner receptacles they may contain. In the case of packages of explosives, no rupture is permitted. When removable-head drums intended to contain solids are subjected to a drop test in such a way as to strike the target by the head, the packaging may be regarded as having passed the test if the contents are retained intact by a device such as an inner receptacle(e. g. a plastic bag) even if the lid is no longer a leakproof fit on the head of the drum.
