World exposition sanctioned by the International Bureau of Expositions, held in Vancouver 2 May-30 Oct. 1986. The theme, Transportation and Communication, celebrated the centenaires of the founding of Vancouver and the arrival on the Pacific coast of the first passenger train. Fifty-four governments and industries from six continents participated and there were over 22 million individual visits to the site. The commissioner general was Patrick Reid. Located along Vancouver's inner-city waterway, the 70 hectare site featured over 80 pavilions and many indoor and outdoor performance venues, including the Xerox International Theatre, a 1500-seat outdoor amphitheatre; The Big House, a 400-seat theatre of longhouse design; The Barn, a 300-seat proscenium theatre; and the Street of the Expo site on which a street festival took place throughout the exposition's run. The Canadian Pavilion, separate from the main site accessible to visitors by a four--minute ride on Vancouver's new Advanced Light Rapid Transit system, housed five performance spaces including a 500-seat outdoor amphitheatre, the 380-seat Amiga Studio(the exhibition's only enclosed theatre), and the 350-seat Inner Stage. 1, record 1, English, - Expo%2086

1, record 1, French, - Expo%2086

For more than six decades the US Government has been implementing policies to stem urban blight and decay. Despite massive investments in social programs for decaying inner cities there is growing evidence of accelerating slumification and increasing social problems. Unknown to many, people in the slums and hyper-ghettos have, in their daily struggle for basis needs, developed new and innovative mechanisms for survival. These help to maintain both human dignity and a sense of community. In addition, they visibly change the community and serve as an impulse to revitalizing neighborhoods. The Community Garden Movement of New York City is a successful example of a grassroots initiative that made a visible impact on the slums by motivating the community and mobilizing endogenous potentials. 2, record 2, English, - slumification

What Allen advocates increases the pressure for more new housing elsewhere in the region. If these pressures are not met to offset the constraints imposed in the Upper East Side and in similar NIMBY strongholds, all consumers will see prices escalate. Further, consumers who cannot afford increased housing prices where it is allowed of within the strongholds of constrained upper class neighborhoods, will have to crowd into older areas where only code enforcement will avoid slumification. 3, record 2, English, - slumification

5, no 39, (1979), p. 64). 2, record 2, French, - taudification

3, record 2, French, - taudification

Orbiting Geophysical Observatory(OGO), series of six orbiting observatories launched between 1964 and 1969 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to study the earth's atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere and the solar wind. In order to provide global coverage, three of the satellites(OGO-2, OGO-4, and OGO-6) were launched into low polar orbits while the other three(OGO-1, OGO-3, and OGO-5) were placed in eccentric orbits ranging out as far as almost 92, 830 mi(150, 000 km). Each observatory carried 20-25 instruments, including cosmic ray detectors, counters, and telescopes, ionization chambers, Geiger counters, magnetometers, spectrometers, photometers, micrometeoroid detectors, and ion and electron traps. Among the significant achievements of the OGO program were the first observations of daytime auroras and of the protons responsible for the ring of electric current that surrounds the earth during magnetic storms, the collection of data showing the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere, and the verification of the existence of the plasmapause, the inner boundary of the region of trapped radiation in the magnetosphere. 2, record 3, English, - Orbiting%20Geophysical%20Observatory

Test the effect of species of log, soil contact, insects, and diameter on the rate of log decomposition and release of nutrients... The experiments are being conducted at six sites located within intact old-growth Douglas-fir-western hemlock forests. The experimental design is a split-split plot in time. Each site represents a block, and log species is the main plot effect. Substrate layer(that is, inner bark, outer bark, sapwood, and heartwood) is the subplot effect. The plan is to resample logs annually for the first 5 years, and then spread out sampling over 2, 5 and 10 years as time passes. 2, record 4, English, - plot%20effect
