Microincision vitrectomy surgery(MIVS) is one of the most significant innovations in vitreous surgery since the modern vitrectomy was developed... in the early 1970s. MIVS is defined as a combination of 25-or 23-gauge instrumentation and a transconjunctival sutureless procedure. The indication of MIVS was limited in macular surgery for several years after its introduction because of several disadvantages, including flexible instruments, lower aspiration rate, and dim illumination. The stiffness of instruments, cutting rates, and aspiration rates have been improved and the introduction of brighter light sources, such as xenon lamps, has improved illumination. As a result of these improvements, the indications for MIVS have expanded to include complicated cases with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

A Soltau Model RVS 250-AS-STS microtunneling machine with a slurry spoil removal system was selected on a lease arrangement to install the 24-in. sewer line. A mixed face cutting head configuration was selected in anticipation of the varying ground conditions. The unit is supplied with high pressure water jets which have proven effective in boring through dense clays. The RVS 250-AS-STS involves two new innovations. First, it utilizes a state-of-the-art laser guidance system coupled with a completely digital operator control panel with continuous, up-to-date information on the tunneling process. A data logger, which can record data at specific time intervals or length of pipe jacked, also provides for a permanent record of the operation.

All imaging modes of the current RADARSAT-1 satellite will be provided, as well as some new modes that incorporate important innovations and improvements. The horizontal co-polarization(HH) of RADARSAT-1 will be supplemented by options for vertical co-polarization(VV) and cross-polarization(HV or VH), and there will be new Quad-Polarization modes providing fully polarimetric data sets. The other major new mode is referred to as Ultra-Fine, providing swath imaging with resolution of about 3 m in each dimension. Re-visit times will be reduced since all imaging modes will be available either to the left or right sides of the satellite track.
