In 1990 a research project was funded by the Commission of the European Communities, within the frame of the funding programme EPOCH with the aim of evaluating the possibility of such integration. The project, which title was "A Comprehensive Forecasting System for Flood Risk Mitigation and Control"(AFORISM)(Todini, 1995c) aimed at verifying different approaches in rainfall modelling as well as in rainfall-runoff modelling and their integration in a decision support system both for planning and for real time flood forecasting and management. In order to do so a feasibility study, based upon the Reno river, aiming at integrating all the innovative technologies in an operational decision support tool for flood forecasting and flood impact analysis was carried out by the following research groups.

The Geomatics Development Program was an initiative of the GeoAccess Division, of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada. It was a continuation of the Geographic Information Systems Development Programme(GISDP), which started in 1994. The goal of the GDP was to assist in the development of innovative geomatics applications or technologies by strengthening and supporting the competitiveness of the Canadian geomatics industry, and to assist with the transferring of technology. This was a partnership programme that provided partial funding support for the development of geomatics applications and related technologies in the private sector.

Il a remplacé le Programme de développement des systèmes d'information géographiques (PDSIG) qui a démarré en 1994. Le but du PDG était d'aider les entreprises canadiennes de l'industrie de la géomatique à mettre au point des applications ou des technologies innovatrices en géomatique, en renforçant et en soutenant la compétitivité de l'industrie canadienne de la géomatique et en participant au transfert technologique. Le PDG est un programme de partenariat qui offre un financement partiel pour le développement des applications en géomatique et des technologies connexes dans le secteur privé.
