In 1989, the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment(CCME) launched the National Contaminated Sites Remediation Program(NCSRP), sponsored and administered by bilateral agreements between the federal government and the provincial and territorial governments. One of the components of the NCSRP is the DESRT(Development and Demonstration of Site Remediation Technology) Program, which ran from 1992 to 1995. The Geomatics Development Program was an initiative of the GeoAccess Division, of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada. It was a continuation of the Geographic Information Systems Development Programme(GISDP), which started in 1994. The goal of the GDP was to assist in the development of innovative geomatics applications or technologies by strengthening and supporting the competitiveness of the Canadian geomatics industry, and to assist with the transferring of technology.
