They may also type letters, complete coding and billing tasks, and organize data for input into databases.

In general, two files are input to an automated coding system. One file contains either the survey responses or administrative files, which are to be coded, referred to as the input file. The other file is called the reference file, which contains the predetermined code set. Then, for each record from the input file, a search is performed in the reference file. If a match is found, the code in the reference file is assigned to the corresponding record from the input file. Otherwise, the code is left blank. Some of the advantages of an automated coding system are that the process increasingly becomes faster, consistent, and more economical.

Departments involved in construction and repairs using their own resources(e. g., labour and materiel) should include a field designated as «asset object» at the end of the departmental input coding block. The actual goods or services used is then coded in the line object field, while the type of asset affected is recorded by coding the last three digits of the corresponding economic object in the asset object field. This data is required by Statistics Canada to show capital formation in the National Accounts.

Under the new FF, transactions for FA&HSL vote codes 12 and 15 projects will no longer be processed through the Work In Process(WIP), they will instead be posted directly to the Separately Controlled allotment. In order for this to take place, the FMS code block expander must be modified so that when a transaction is input to the project in FMS, the correct expanded line of coding will be generated causing the appropriate transaction to be posted to the FA&HSL cost centre or RC.

The financial control area of the coding block can be used to accommodate requirements of individual departments such as work order code, project code, province, and the like. There is no theoretical limit to the number of imposed coding fields, although no one dictionary in the CAS(Central Accounting System) may impose more than 25 digits with a total limit of 80 digits in the CAS for all such fields. The 25-digit input coding block and the use of collator numbers are also relevant in the determination of the total digits available for coding and classification purposes.

As an intelligent programming tutor, BIP is incomplete. The only form of advice it can give the student consists of hints stored with the different tasks, since it has no knowledge of design, coding or debugging. Furthermore, its feedback to the student is limited by its inability to diagnose logical errors. When a program has been completed, BIP simply tests it on a set of input/output pairs without any analysis of the algorithm, as do systems presented in Chapter 11. After a syntactic match on keywords has revealed the use or absence of certain constructs designated as necessary or forbidden for the task, the student is merely informed about language constructs that should or shouldn’t have been used.

Such codes could include responsibility centre, activity or object codes that departments require for their own management and control purposes, other codes needed to produce special reports for central agencies, or specific financial control information codes.
