The set point theory [is] arguably the most influential and debated theory of body weight control. It suggests that like temperature in a room controlled by a thermostat, body weight(or body fat) is controlled by an equivalent device(ponderostat, adipostat) residing in the hypothalamus. Borrowing from the engineering vocabulary, this device receives feedback input from the controlled parameter(room temperature, body weight or body fat), and generates an error signal in a comparator if this feedback signal is deviating from a preset reference value(set point). The error signal is used to turn up or down any mechanisms that determine the level of the controlled parameter(heat production or dissipation in the case of room temperature, metabolizable energy-in or energy lost in the case of body weight/adiposity). 4, record 1, English, - ponderostat

2, record 1, French, - pond%C3%A9rostat

Lock-in is a fundamental physical phenomenon associated with all oscillating devices. Laser gyros exhibit the same phenomenon, in that the coupling mechanism is the reflection of light from one laser beam back along the path where it interacts with the oppositely traveling beam. This is called backscatter and is caused primarily by imperfect mirrors. 4, record 7, English, - lock%2Din

3, record 7, French, - blocage
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 CONT

1, record 25, French, - quantification%20angulaire

... for a mechanically dithered RLG [ring laser gyro], non-linearities(sidebands) appear in the input-output scale factor curve for an input rotation rate which is a harmonic of the dither frequency... There are two disadvantages to dithering. One is that the rotation rate periodically passes through zero where lock-in occurs. This results in a "random walk" angular position error. The other is that the vibration of the gyro body may affect other components or the gyro may be affected by other vibration sources. The laser gyro need not be mechanically dithered. An adaptive control system in which some or all of the plant parameters cannot be identified, thus requiring the use of an implicit identification technique in which specific output variables are compared with the desired performance. This comparison is easily made by driving both the system and a model of the system with unknown parameters. The model produces the proper output for the given input function, and an error can be generated by comparing the two outputs. The error function is the one used to modify the parameters of the controller.... 1, record 43, English, - model%20reference%20control%20system

The representation of a general pulse transmission system is given in Figure 8. 1. Here, the information input to the system is encoded in some sense.... This encoded signal drives the modulator, which maps the pulse sequence into an analog wave suitable for transmission over the channel.... At the receiving end, the demodulator maps the received analog waveform into a pulse sequence that is a "best guess" of the sequence transmitted. The decoder operates on the binary sequence to extract the information originally impressed on the encoder. The overall objective is to transfer the information from the input to the output within some a priori specified low error rate, where the error rate is the average number of disagreements per unit of time between the inputs and the outputs. 1, record 44, English, - pulse%20transmission%20system

A method of determining the plan parameters of a system by comparing specific output variables with the desired performance. This comparison is easily made by driving both the system and a model of the system with unknown parameters. The model produces the proper output for the given input function, and an error can be generated by comparing the two outputs.
