Processing of MRI data is usually performed in an array processor using the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) algorithm. These computational requirements generally require the input data to be in a matrix whose dimensions are a power of 2, such as 128x128, 256x256, or 512x512. If the acquired k-space data does not complete this matrix, it is customary to fill in the missing cells with zeroes, a technique called zero padding, zero filling, or zero-interpolation filling(ZIP).

A rectangular array of horizontal and vertical input or output leads with diode or correed crosspoints at the intersection, used as a means of switching from any input to any output.(SMICO, 71 : 238) In circuit switching at least, the matrix has proven to be the most difficult section to reduce to electronics partly because of the mass of contacts that is represented, but also because the best electronic device is not as good a switch point as are metallic contacts.(LEETEL, 76 : 90)
