DEF

The electrical resistance of the sleepers and ballast which affects the adjustment of a track circuit.

CONT

Ballast resistance is determined by the value of input resistance the rail line, which at high frequencies practically is equal to the wave impedance.

OBS

ballast resistance: term and definition standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission.

Record 4 2010-03-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Telecommunications Transmission
DEF

The synchronous signal produced by combining the channel signals.

OBS

A desired signal type is chosen and used as a reference for amplitude and phase. The other signals are then added to the desired signal after being multiplied by scale factors. These scale factors include amplitude scaling determined from input and ratios and the types of modulation being combined. They also include carrier phase positions and modulation time delays which position the interference wave form relative to the desired signal.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Transmission (Télécommunications)
DEF

Record 6 2008-02-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electrical Engineering
CONT

Various methods have been proposed to implement a digital-to-analog converter(DAC). One such method is to create a pulse train whose average value is equal to the magnitude of the digital input and then average the pulse train by passing it through a low-pass filter. Conventionally, pulse wave modulators(PWM) are used to create the pulse train from a digital input signal. However, the quality of the analog signal that results from the filtered pulse train may contain considerable noise unless an expensive low-pass filter is constructed.

Record 8 2001-11-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oscillators and Oscillating Circuits (Electronics)
CONT

The term applied to the phenomenon which occurs when an output signal is limited in some way by the full range of an amplifier, analog-to-digital converter(ADC) or other device. When this occurs, the signal is flattened a the peak values, the signal approaches the shape of a square wave, and high frequency components are introduced. Clipping may be hard, as is the case when the signal is strictly limited at some level; or it may be soft, in which case the clipping signal continues to follow the input at some reduced gain.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Information Processing (Informatics)
CONT

The representation of a general pulse transmission system is given in Figure 8. 1. Here, the information input to the system is encoded in some sense.... This encoded signal drives the modulator, which maps the pulse sequence into an analog wave suitable for transmission over the channel.... At the receiving end, the demodulator maps the received analog waveform into a pulse sequence that is a "best guess" of the sequence transmitted. The decoder operates on the binary sequence to extract the information originally impressed on the encoder. The overall objective is to transfer the information from the input to the output within some a priori specified low error rate, where the error rate is the average number of disagreements per unit of time between the inputs and the outputs.
