The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal (or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal," but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix" (peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street," now "la rue Saint-Jacques," became the country’s financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada." In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002 ... 2, record 2, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

A city of the Yukon Territory and its capital since 1953, located at kilometre 1476, just off the Alaska Highway. The city lies mainly on the western side of the Yukon River, nestled in a protected valley surrounded by Canyon Mountain (locally known as Grey Mountain) to the east, Haeckel Hill to the northwest and Golden Horn Mountain to the south. Located at the head of navigation on the Yukon River, Whitehorse grew significantly by becoming a temporary stopping point --past two major obstacles on the river, Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse Rapids-- for prospectors heading for Dawson (then known as "Dawson City") during the Klondike Gold Rush Years (1897-1899). In 1900, with the completion of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway from Skagway in Alaska, to Carcross and Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, the community grew around the point where the railway and river met, on the western side of the Yukon River. After the gold rush, Whitehorse’s population dropped, but with the help of navigation and aviation companies, the British Yukon Navigation Company building riverboats and operating them to Dawson until 1954, and the British Yukon Aviation Company transporting mail, freight and passengers, the economy was kept afloat. During World War II, Whitehorse played a significant role as a key link in the north-south transportation system, hosting the Americans and Canadians in charge of expanding the air link that was the Northwest Staging Route (a series of airfields across the Northwest), building the 2300-km Alaska Highway, or constructing the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells, N.W.T., and an oil refinery at Whitehorse. In 1950, Whitehorse was incorporated as a city. In 1953, the territorial capital of the Yukon was moved from Dawson to Whitehorse, adding the government sector to an economy made of the mining (copper, silver and lead-zinc), tourist and oil industries. Though the mines shut down in Yukon and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway ended its operations 2, record 23, English, - Whitehorse

A kakemono ... is a Japanese scroll painting, an ink-and-brush painting that hangs in a recess in a traditional Japanese house. In a teahouse, or the room called a chashitsu, which is located in a secluded garden setting away from the main dwelling, the choice of the kakemono and its complementary flower arrangement help set the spiritual mood of the ceremony itself, in perfect harmony with the time of year. 3, record 33, English, - kakemono

An airport located 55 km from downtown Montréal, officially inaugurated in 1975, and intended to become Montréal’s main airport. Initially named "Mirabel International Airport," it was later designated "Montréal Airport in Mirabel" (Montréal-Mirabel) when chosen for international flights while the "Montréal Airport in Dorval" (Montréal-Dorval) was limited to domestic flights, that is flights inside Canada. But inadequate terrestrial links between Montréal and Mirabel contributed to give to the Montréal Airport in Dorval, named the "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" (Montréal-Trudeau) since January 1, 2004, its international status, leaving the charter (up to Autumn 2004) and cargo flights to the Mirabel Airport (the most common designation for the airport). An airport located in Dorval, now a part of the city of Montréal, and used for private, local, national and international flights. The airport was first the "Dorval Airport," from the name of the city in the suburbs of Montréal, then the "Dorval International Airport," to become the airport for domestic flights, that is the flights limited to Canada, with the construction of the "Mirabel International Airport" inaugurated in 1975 and intended for international flights. But inadequate terrestrial links between Montréal and Mirabel contributed to give to the Montréal Dorval Airport ("Montréal-Dorval") its international status, leaving the charter (up to Autumn 2004) and cargo flights to the Mirabel Airport ("Montréal-Mirabel"); political decisions for these ends were accompanied by important subsidies for the building of added accommodations to what has become the "Montréal Dorval International Airport." With the amalgamation or merging of all the cities on the Île de Montréal, including the former cities of Montréal and of Dorval, to form the new city of Montréal on the 1 January 2002, the airport became the "Montréal Airport," a reality usage had already confirmed. On the 1 January 2004, the airport’s name changed to "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" to honour a former Prime Minister of Canada as do other important airports in the country. The official name will, no doubt, not be quoted at length all the time; the forms mentioned as correct on the present record will surely be used instead, including the recommendation of the airport authority as to the use of "Montréal-Trudeau" as the current short form ("fly from Montréal-Trudeau", or "land at the Montréal-Trudeau Airport"). Even if the airport encountered many name and status changes, it never had a name that includes a comma, and had always been represented by YUL, its IATA three-letter code. 3, record 37, English, - Montr%C3%A9al%20Pierre%20Elliott%20Trudeau%20International%20Airport

A large city of Alberta, located on the Bow River, in the southern part of the province, at the meeting of the Canadian prairies and the Rocky Montains foothills. The city started as a trading post (fur trade, bison hunting and illicit-whisky trading) with the construction of a fort named Fort Calgary by the North-West Mounted Police at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers in 1876. (The word Calgary, of Gaelic origin, means "bay farm.") "Fort Calgary" is linked to Canada by the railway in 1883; the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Company laid out its town site where the city now lies. Incorporated under the name "Calgary" in 1884, the town received the city status in 1893. Financial centre of Western Canada and headquarters of Canada’s oil and natural gas industries, Calgary, host of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, is the fastest growing Canadian city in the West. 2, record 38, English, - Calgary

2, record 38, French, - Calgary
