Record 2 2010-05-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Grain Growing
  • Milling and Cereal Industries
CONT

The grain placed in the drying bin should be relatively clean. Fines, chaff, small or broken seeds and weed seeds increase the grain’s resistance to airflow. Fines also tend to accumulate in the center of the bin and may spoil due to lack of conditioning.

CONT

Good quality, clean, sound grain is much easier to maintain in storage than cracked and broken grain. Broken kernels will mold three to four times faster than whole kernels. Broken grain also is more susceptible to insect attack, since some insects feed only on broken or cracked kernels. It is critical that initial grain condition receives considerable attention.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Culture des céréales
  • Minoterie et céréales
DEF

Record 4 2005-08-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ecology (General)
DEF

A sudden increase in the population of a species (especially a pest species).

CONT

Under certain conditions, insects may attack a very large number of trees over a wide area. This is known as an outbreak. An outbreak often occurs in a vulnerable or ageing forest. An outbreak is more likely to occur in large stands of the same vulnerable species when populations of insect predators are too small.

OBS

outbreak: An outbreak generally relates to a negative event (pest outbreak); otherwise the term "irruption" is used to describe an abrupt increase in the number of a species.

PHR

Pest, animal, plant outbreak.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Écologie (Généralités)
DEF

Explosion de la population d'une espèce.

CONT

Record 6 2003-09-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Silviculture
DEF

A phenotype judged(but not proved by test) to be unusually superior in some quality or qualities, e. g. exceptional growth-rate relative to site, desirable growth habit, high wood quality, exceptional apparent resistance to disease and insect attack or to other adverse locality factors.

OBS

Do not confuse with "elite tree", a kind of tree which has been verified by appropriate testing.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sylviculture
DEF
