Malathion is used both as a protectant on grain to prevent insect damage and as an insecticide for controlling established infestations. While less toxic to mammals than many other insecticides, it is poisonous and care should be exercised in its application. Malathion doesn’t have a fast knock-down action like pyrethrins, but is a much better residual insecticide. A malathion spray of 1% remains active up to four weeks on concrete surfaces and up to a year on wooden and metal surfaces. 4, record 6, English, - malathion

3, record 6, French, - malathion

For CWRS [Canada Western Red Spring] and CWAD [Canada Western Amber Durum], there are specific limits for kernels damaged by grasshopper and armyworm, midge and sawfly; grasshoppers and armyworms chew out sections of kernels, particularly the ends and sides; at an early stage, armyworms may chew tunnels through the kernels; this destroys the endosperm, and leaves the exposed chewed areas susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections; heavy discolourations and moulds may result; the orange wheat blossom midge causes a distinct form of damage; grade tolerances for midge have existed for many years based primarily on the shrivelling and distortion of midge-damaged kernels; the tiny midge larvae feed directly on the developing kernels in the heads of wheat; the extent of damage largely depends on the number of larvae feeding on each kernel. Only recently have the full effects of midge damage on Canadian red spring bread wheat quality been studied, revealing the seriousness of midge damage to quality. The shrunken distorted grains reduce flour yields and produce dark flours with increased flour ash. Severely midge-damaged wheat exhibits weak, sticky dough properties, low baking absorption and poor bread quality. Protein content is abnormally high, but gluten protein quality is distinctly inferior. 2, record 7, English, - insect%20damage

2, record 7, French, - dommages%20caus%C3%A9s%20par%20les%20insectes

Canada Orchard Run is the grade name for cherries that have dry circular or horseshoe stem end cracks not extending beyond the stem bowl, but in all other respects comply with the requirements of Canada Domestic grade. All grades of cherries require that the cherries be mature, handpicked, sound, of one variety, properly packed, free from damage and free from insects, insect larva, insect injury, disease, gum, twigs, leaves and dried specimens. In addition, Canada No. 1 grade requires that the cherries also be fairly clean, of good colour, of fair size, table graded, free from hail marks and in the case of Elkhorn or Lambert varieties not more than 15% of the fruit without stems, and in the case of other varieties, not more than 10% of the fruit without stems. The lingonberry fruitworm is a small moth whose larvae borrow into and feed on lingonberry fruit. Feeding damage causes berry loss, but most of the problems are caused by the wthitish caterpillars emerging from the fruit after it is picked. This results in reduced marketability. There is increasing interest in domesticated lingonberry cultivars from the US and Europe, and several of these cultivars are now being tested here. To ensure industry growth the fruit must be free of insects and insect damage. With this research goal, the Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Centre tested a monitoring system for the fruitworm using "pheromones". 1, record 12, English, - lingonberry%20fruitworm

1, record 12, French, - ver%20de%20la%20lingonne
