INSECT POPULATION [14 records]

Record 1 2024-12-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Husbandry
  • Insects, Centipedes, Spiders, and Scorpions
CONT

Insect rearing is used for many purposes, and reared insects have uses far beyond the scope of entomology. Many insects are reared for insecticide trials, entomological research, population restoration, as well as for economic resources.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Élevage des animaux
  • Insectes, mille-pattes, araignées et scorpions
CONT

[...] Ses objectifs sont : Production de protéines [...] Recherche scientifique [...] Production de sous-produits [...]

CONT

On the enumeration of insect populations by the method of net collection. The determination of insect population density in unit areas presents a vexatious problem to entomologists and ecologists... the difficulties of collection of individuals on a unit area are manifold.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Pests (Crops)
  • Grain Growing
CONT

Black bug... The insect is common in rainfed and irrigated wetland environments during the vegetative stages of the rice crop. It prefers continuously cropped irrigated rice areas and poorly drained fields. Damages are observed more frequently in dry season rice crops and densely planted fields are preferred... One of the cultural control practices to reduce the population of the black bug is to maintain a clean field by removing the weeds and drying the rice field during plowing.... Mechanical control measures include the use of mercury bulbs as light traps for egg-laying adults.

CONT

The term Attract & Kill(or Lure and Kill) is normally used for pheromone(or other attractant) based control methods that use an insecticide to kill the target pest. Mass Trapping, as the name implies, depends on the use of a mechanical device(insect trap) to remove the insect from the population. From a theoretical point of view, the approaches are very similar. Both methods rely on attracting the pest to a pheromone(or other attractant) source and removing the insect from the breeding population.

CONT

Like other attractants, colored objects can be used in traps for monitoring or mass trapping [...] Yellow, sticky-coated cards or plastic cups are widely used in mass trapping programs to help control whiteflies in greenhouses.

CONT

DEF

A material which exhibits synergism, the joint action of different agents so that the total effect is greater than the sum of the independent effects. Example : Pesticide X kills 40% of an insect population, Pesticide Y kills 20%. When applied together, X and Y kill 95%.

CONT

Synergists or Activators. Synergists are not in themselves considered toxic or insecticidal, but are materials used with insecticides to synergize or enhance the activity of the insecticides.

OBS

According to some authors, activators not only behave synergically but also can accelerate the effect of a pesticide.

DEF

CONT

The parasitic fungus Beauveria was the most novel practice, and the main form of biological control tested in the project. The fungus, which is native to the Andes but usually not found at population densities high enough to be an effective form of control, is mixed into the soil where potatoes are stored on the ground. The fungus attacks weevils when they emerge from the tubers to pupate in the ground. The fungus is easy to apply and is similar to the traditional use of ash to combat insect infestations in farmers’ stores. The effect of the parasitic fungus on the pest is highly visible; therefore, farmers were quick to comprehend the efficacy of this practice(Torres et al., 1993).

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
  • Plant Breeding
DEF

The growing of segregating generations of a hybrid of self-pollinated crops in a bulk plot, with or without mass selection, followed by individual plant selection in F 6 or later generations.

CONT

In the bulk method of handling hybrid material the entire population from a cross is grown and harvested in mass each year. Successive crops of seed are sown for five to ten years to allow natural selection for characters, such as cold resistance or insect resistance, to take place. By this time the poorly adapted strains are largely eliminated, while the remaining strains are mostly pure breeding(or homozygous). Plants are then selected, and the progenies tested as previously described.

OBS

Not to be confused with "mass selection".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
  • Amélioration végétale
CONT
