A pale-yellow liquid with a persistent lemon odor, steam-distilled from some Gramineae and containing mainly geraniol and citronellal. It is used as an insectifuge and disinfectant. A flavoring for beverages, ices, candy and confectionery. Excessive consumption may cause death.

According to some authors, "citronella oil" is mainly used for Java citronella oil, but sometimes for Ceylon citronella oil.

On l'emploie comme insectifuge et désinfectant. Aromatisant pour boissons, glaces, confiseries et pâtisseries. L'ingestion excessive d'essence de citronnelle peut causer la mort.

D'après les sources consultées, l'essence de citronnelle peut provenir d'Andropogon ou Cymbapogon nardus (essence de citronnelle de Ceylan ou de Java), ou bien de Zymdropogon nardus (essence de citronnelle de Sicile). Certains caractères de l'essence peuvent varier, selon l'origine de la plante.
