... There, he [Paul Emmett] sought out a better understanding of the mechanisms by which ammonia could be taken out of the air and turned into a fertilizer for plants. Emmett knew that the Germans had developed just such a mechanism during World War I, but scientists did not entirely understand how and why the process worked. The result of this investigation was the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) Method, which remains the second-most cited scientific paper on the process and a technique still in use worldwide. The BET Method provides scientists with the ability to measure a variety of properties of gas molecules on a solid surface: the surface area, the composition of the surface, and the amount of catalyst that is both on the surface and in the interior of the solid. Dr. Emmett’s work on the BET Method earned him a Nobel Prize nomination. 1, record 6, English, - Brunauer%26ndash%3BEmmett%26ndash%3BTeller%20method

The spring tree is first shaped out of thin plywood. Fiberglass material(the fiberglass looks like a white screen mesh) is then stretched over this plywood, and liquid resin is hand-brushed or prayed on top, resulting in a very strong and durable product. Two "springs" made of lightweight steel strips are then inserted under the tree running from front to the rear along the widest part of the seat, and set about two inches(five centimeters) from the outside. The springs provide greater comfort and more flexibility to the rider by allowing the pressure exerted through the seat bones to be transmitted to the horse. 3, record 9, English, - spring%20tree%20of%20a%20saddle

There are two basic methods of measuring material with portable gauges, backscatter and direct transmission. "Direct transmission" is considered the more precise of the two, as it offers less error in measuring composition and compensates for surface roughness. To measure soil density, for example, the source is placed in a tube and inserted beneath the surface through a punched access hole. Radiation is then transmitted from the source to a detector on the base of the gauge. The density of the soil is determined by the radiation level at the detector. 1, record 10, English, - direct%20transmission%20method

1, record 10, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20de%20transmission%20directe

The bioreactor "plug" is made of slotted PVC pipe which is screw cap sealed at each end. Each plug is loaded with an inert porous material which serves as a structural support matrix for the microorganisms. The seed cultures in the bioplugs are a mixture of microorganisms selected for their abilities to biodegrade the contaminants of concern... The bioplugs are strategically inserted into the contaminated zone(s). Liquids then flow through the plugs by a pressure gradient created using compressed air. This flow acts to accelerate the movement of ground or irrigation water through the immobilized bed; thereby, facilitating the mineralization of organics within the aqueous phase and the bulk generation of biomass which bleeds off the bed. 1, record 11, English, - bioplug

Commencing in 1974 and produced by the Education and Cultural Affairs Division of the National Museum of Man in conjunction with the relevant research divisions, the Museum Kits were multi-media, thematic, learning packages which were loaned free of charge for two-week intervals to schools community groups, libraries, etc. Each "museum in a box" included artifacts, specimens and related interpretive material such as films, maps, fact sheets, slides and resource books. There were two types of kits-a small kit with limited artifacts and resource materials, usually in separate language versions and the larger, bilingual, more complex kits, with resources inserted according to the requirements of the borrowers. The kits were designed for the 11-14 age group and were to promote an understanding and appreciation for Canada's multicultural heritage as well as the functions and importance of human history museums within Canada. Catalogues of available kits were produced and circulated through the National Programs Division. They have been discontinued. 1, record 15, English, - museum%20in%20a%20box

It is based on the principle that if two electrodes are inserted in the ground, and if an external voltage is applied across them, there will be a flow of current through the earth from one electrode to the other. If the medium through which the current flows is homogeneous in its electrical properties, the flow lines will be regular and, in a horizontal plane, symmetrical about the line joining the electrodes. Any inhomogeneities in these properties will cause distortions in the lines of current flow. Such distortions indicate the existence of buried material with higher conductivity than its surroundings, so that it attracts the flow lines toward itself, or with lower conductivity so that it tends to force the lines into the surrounding medium. 1, record 21, English, - equipotential%20line%20method

A preliminary plaster or stone model of the patient's teeth and gums is made. The resin impression tray material is applied to this preliminary study model to form a custom tray. This tray is then filled with impression material and inserted into the patient's mouth to make an impression, from which a final, more precise, model of the patient's mouth is cast. 1, record 24, English, - custom%20impression%20tray

Another process somewhat related to injection blow-molding is dip blow molding used for small containers. The process has the advantage of reducing some of the molded-in stress. A core rod is inserted into a cupel, displacing resin and packing it into the neck finish area. As the core rod moves away, a predetermined amount of resin is permitted to remain on the rod. A hot knife cuts the hot plastic, separating the material on the rod from the melt pool in the cupel. The core rod is then rotated to the blow station for blow molding. Hesta is a supplier of this type of machinery. 3, record 28, English, - dip%20blow%20molding

An aqueous suspension of one or more papermaking pulps and other material from the stage of disintegration of the pulp to the formation of the web or sheet of paper or board. NOTES 1) Also known in English as "stuff". 2) In French the word "pâte" is normally used unqualified as the equivalent of the English terms "pulp" and "stock". For this reason cross-references are inserted to the appropriate definition wherever necessary in this vocabulary. Particular attention is drawn to this as the distinction may be significant in certain circumstances. 1, record 42, English, - stock

1, record 42, French, - p%C3%A2te
