A Langmuir probe is a device named after Nobel Prize winning physicist Irving Langmuir, used to determine the electron temperature, electron density, and electric potential of a plasma. It works by inserting one or more electrodes into a plasma, with a constant or time-varying electric potential between the various electrodes or between them and the surrounding vessel. The measured currents and potentials in this system allow the determination of the physical properties of the plasma. 3, record 12, English, - Langmuir%20probe

SMBG works by having patients perform a number of glucose tests each day or each week. The test most commonly involves pricking a finger with a lancet device to obtain a small blood sample, applying a drop of blood onto a reagent strip, and determining the glucose concentration by inserting the strip into a reflectance photometer for an automated reading. Test results are then recorded in a logbook or stored in the glucose meter's electronic memory. People with diabetes can be taught to use their SMBG results to correct any deviations out of a desired target range by changing their carbohydrate intake, exercising, or using more or less insulin. 2, record 14, English, - self%2Dmonitoring%20of%20blood%20glucose

Selfish genes are parasitic sequences of DNA that increase their own frequency in a population, usually to the detriment of the organisms that carry them. Although most genes can prosper only by contributing to the well-being of their bearers, there are certain times in the life cycle of an organism when genetic elements can potentially cheat and gain a transmission advantage.... Some genes cheat by inserting extra copies of themselves into cells; some cripple or obliterate their genetic counterparts on other chromosomes. A few can even change the sex of their host so that it produces only eggs or sperm favorable to the gene's distribution. Virtually all species, including humans, harbor at least some selfish genes. 1, record 55, English, - selfish%20gene

The technical problems involved in gene transfer therapy make heart transplant surgery look easy. Theoretically, recombinant DNA(inserting strands of DNA where they don’t naturally occur) allows for gene transplantation. Realistically, it is extremely difficult. Researchers have yet to find a way to put a healthy gene into a human somatic cell. DNA is well protected within the cells. DNA writes codes for life, and life would change if DNA were altered. The cell views altered(mutant) DNA as foreign, just like the body views a donor heart. Just like the body has an immune system, the cell has defenses against mutant DNA. 2, record 74, English, - gene%20transplantation

1, record 74, French, - transplantation%20g%C3%A9n%C3%A9tique

Surgical robots can be classified into active or passive. A passive robot would be used to position a fixture appropriately and then be switched off, to be followed by the surgeon inserting his instruments. An example of this would be a robot to help position a device for guiding neurosurgical biopsy needles. By contrast, an active robot would actually move the tools. 1, record 85, French, - g%C3%A8ne%20de%20st%C3%A9rilit%C3%A9

The application of robotics in space poses difficult control problems. One of these is the precise control of the forces exerted by the robot during contact tasks such as inserting brittle samples into ports with small clearances, or opening doors or drawers without overstepping microgravity disturbance limits or actuating a mechanism with a specified force level. The cost of developing, from the beginning, a mature and robust space robot controller with these capabilities is prohibitive in terms of the resources available for space robotics research in Europe : a mature industrial robot controller-with less advanced capabilities-already represents several tens of man-years of development, and has proved its reliability in thousands of demanding round-the-clock manufacturing installations. 2, record 94, English, - robot%20controller
