The internal waters of a state comprise: all parts of the sea landwards of the base-lines from which the territorial sea is measured; ports and anchorages; river-mouths; the water-courses of national rivers; bays and gulfs or parts of them; inland seas; lakes and landlocked seas or parts of them.

For legal purposes the sea is divided into three different zones, each of which is subject to different rules. Moving outwards from land these three zones are (i) internal waters, (ii) territorial sea and (iii) high seas.

Nigeria has two major marine fisheries sub-sectors : the artisanal or small-scale and the industrial or trawl fisheries. Marine artisanal fisheries activities are divided into two major components : the brackish water fisheries with fishing activities in the creeks and estuaries where freshwater flowing down the rivers mixes with salt water moving up with high tide; and the artisanal inshore fisheries with fishermen operating in waters of less than 40 m depth.

Les recherches réalisées par le groupe bassin versant de l'UMR CARRTEL (Centre alpin de recherche sur les réseaux trophiques des écosystèmes limniques) à l'INRA Thonon ont pour objet les transferts de polluants des bassins versants agricoles et ruraux aux écosystèmes aquatiques. Il s'agit de comprendre les mécanismes et ordres de grandeur des transferts de polluants (nutriments, sédiments et contaminants fécaux) de ce type de bassins versants vers les eaux de surface, afin de concevoir des méthodes de diagnostic (bilans, facteurs de risques, impacts potentiels) des stratégies et des itinéraires techniques pour la maîtrise de ces pollutions, et notamment des pollutions diffuses agricoles.
