DEF

The length of line which passes through the center of a hollow cylindrical or spherical object, and whose end points lie on the inner surface of the object.

CONT

In the measurement of pipe diameters, the inside diameter "ID" is that of the interior circle...

CONT

Because lengths of pipe are joined by external-diameter couplings threaded by standard tools, an increase in the wall thickness can only be obtained by decreasing the internal diameter.

  • Milking Equipment (Agriculture)
DEF

A raised, round rotating platform or carousel on which cows ride while being milked.

CONT

In the rotating parlour, cows are milked on a rotational, raised, circle shaped platform. There are many variations of this type of parlour, based on the way the cows stand on the platform. They can stand in tandem, fishbone or parallel formation, with their heads directed towards the inside or the outside of the platform. The most logical choice is the parallel-type with the heads of the cows directed inward, as this takes up the least space per cow.

CONT

The largest and outermost of the concentric rings or circles making up the house at each end of the curling sheet.

CONT

The house is formed of four concentric circles having a diameter of 12(3, 66 m), 8(2, 44 m), 4(1, 22 m) and 2 feet(0, 61 m) respectively. The ring enclosed by the 12-foot and the 8-foot circles(called "outer ring") is blue and the one enclosed by the 4-foot and the 2-foot circles(called "inner ring" or "inside ring"), red, which leaves uncolored the ring enclosed by the 8-foot and the 4-foot circles(called "middle ring") and the inside of the 2-foot circle(called "tee" or "button"), giving them a white appearance. Seen from above, the house appears as a series of three rings, blue, white and red around a white button.

OBS

The term "circle" refers, more properly, to each of the four circular lines forming the house while the term "ring" refers to the coloured or uncoloured surface between two circles. But since there are four circles and four inner surfaces, the terms tend to be used as synonyms, as are "concentric ring(s)" and "concentric circle(s)." DEF

The solid rocket fuel fills the inside of the rocket from its top to the bottom. In the middle of the rocket is a shaped clearing that provides combustion area and allows the mixture to burn evenly. This shape may be a circle or a star depending upon the type of thrust desired for launch. The rocket's ignition commences by shooting flames down its entire length to initiate the combustion evenly throughout the grain, another term for solid rocket propellant. As the fuel burns and its waste parts are ejected out the nozzle the propellant area grows. As the propellant area grows there is more propellant to burn which means that the rocket's thrust increases.

Leather or nylon headgear, with attachments for side reins and lunge line, worn by the horse when it is being lunged.

CONT

A cavesson resembles a heavy, well fitting halter and is the preferred headpiece for longeing (lungeing) English horses. "Breaking" cavessons are generally made of stout leather with heavy metal nosepieces and have straps to fasten them securely and keep them in position because during "breaking" it is often necessary to tug or pull quite hard on the line to control the horse. Lighter, simpler cavessons are also available for the very young horse, the already-trained horse, for use with a bit or bridle, and for use as a dropped noseband.

OBS

The traditional cavesson is made from leather but nylon cavessons are also available. A longeing(lungeing) cavesson has a padded noseband with a jointed metal nosepiece that usually has 3 swivel-mounted rings attached to it. Generally the middle ring is used for longeing(lungeing) unless a horse carries his head to the outside of the circle extremely. In that case, the inside cavesson ring can be used to bend the horse inward on the longeing(lungeing) circle. The side rings are also used for side rein attachment or long line attachment.

Canter on the outside lead, performed [unintentionally].

CONT

In the false canter (Counter Canter) or the canter on the wrong lead, the horse leads with the outside foreleg instead of the inside foreleg as he should.

CONT

The counter canter refers to the horse’s ability to take the unnatural lead. In a circle to the right the horse would counter canter in his left lead, in a circle to the left he’d be on the right lead. When used properly, the counter canter can be a tool to encourage the horse to travel with an improved capacity for straightness, balance and rated cadence or speed ... The counter canter or a disunited lead can crop up when a horse is positioned incorrectly for a canter depart or lead change. Make sure you’ve asked for the counter canter when it shows up.

CONT

OBS

The large dot located in the centre of the rings at each end of the playing area on a curling sheet, the target toward which the stones are aimed; it helps determine which rock is closest to the centre of the house, where intersect the tee line and the centre line.

OBS

The tee is the uncoloured centre circle of the target; it is outlined by the red 4-foot circle surrounding it. In certain countries, a dolly placed on one end of the tee line is used to mark the centre of the house. The term «dolly» is not a synonym of the term «tee».

OBS

The centre of the house being a full circle and not a ring, there is a mix as to what is really the "inner circle": the red ring or the button? Since the rings, outer, middle and inner, or 12-foot, 8-foot and 4-foot, are considered as having a tee or button in their centre, it follows that the "inner circle" is the red ring enclosed between the 4-foot and the 2-foot circles and not the tee itself, even if the 2-foot circle enclosing the tee is the smallest of the four circles forming the house. [The illustration in The Visual Dictionary clearly establishes that the "inner circle" is the area enclosed by the 4-foot circle].

OBS

DEF

The second-largest of the concentric rings or circles making up the house at each end of the curling sheet.

But since there are four circles and four inner surfaces, the terms tend to be used as synonyms, as are "concentric ring(s)" and "concentric circle(s)." The centre of the house being a full circle and not a ring, there is a mix as to what is really the "inner circle": the red ring or the button?

CONT

Position edge of set-up stone touching the centre line and the outside edge of the eight-foot ring.

Besides the germination points for buds, the main body of the Mandelbrot set has still other kinds of boundary points... Unlike in the parabolic case, the boundary does not extend to the fixed point, but the dynamics of the process does not reach it either. The circles shown around the fixed point are invariant circles, i. e. if one takes an initial point on one of the circles, all iterated points will also be on it. Inside the region bounded by the Julia set, the process runs in the following way : first the point springs from smaller, peripheral buds into larger ones until it comes into the disk containing the fixed point. This disk is called a Siegel disk after the German mathematician Carl Ludwig Siegel. When a point has arrived there, it simply rotates around the fixed point on its invariant circle.

A borehole-surveying device consisting of a gimbal-mounted open frame, rigidly enclosing a graduated circle inside of which is a gimbal-mounted compass. This assemblage, inserted in a glass tube filled with a melted gelatin mixture is placed inside a tightly sealed brass tube or clinometer. When the tube is lowered into, and suspended at a point in a borehole for a sufficient length of time to allow the gelatin to set or jell, the position of the gimbal parts becomes fixed in the solidified gelatin, thereby providing a means whereby the compass course and inclination of the borehole at a specific point may be determined.
