Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) is an ongoing lung condition caused by damage to the lungs. The damage results in swelling and irritation, also called inflammation, inside the airways that limit airflow into and out of the lungs. This limited airflow is known as obstruction. Symptoms include trouble breathing, a daily cough that brings up mucus and a tight, whistling sound in the lungs called wheezing. COPD is most often caused by long-term exposure to irritating smoke, fumes, dust or chemicals. The most common cause is cigarette smoke.... Although COPD is a condition that can get worse over time, COPD is treatable.

Today, advances in medical technology enable speech production by means of a voice prosthesis. By creating a small surgical passage(TEP, or Tracheoesophageal Puncture), inside the stoma, from the back wall of the trachea into the esophageal wall, a small one-inched valved tube(voice prosthesis) can be placed into this passage to enable tracheoesophageal speech. Voice is produced by blocking the stoma, either with a finger or an adjustable tracheostoma valve, so that exhaled air from the lungs can be directed from the trachea through the prosthesis into the esophagus(where vibrations are produced) and then out through the mouth. Fluent, conversational speech is usually acquired within a few days.

According to international regulations, aeronautical instrumentation displays, especially those of military aircraft with transparent cockpits, must be approved by tests which involve actually flying the airplane in order to assess performance in real lighting conditions. The costs and risks are obvious as is the value of creating a system which can recreate the light conditions of an aircraft in flight while it is still on the ground.

Elements of the building envelope are the exterior walls(including windows and doors), the roof and the floor of the lowest level of the building. The building envelope has a number of functions : it holds the building up; it keeps the rain and ground water out; it keeps the wind out; it keeps water vapour out; and it controls the transfer of energy(heat) between the inside and the outside. One material may control only one of these functions or may control several functions at once.

It includes the building foundation", which refers to a completely different concept. We conclude that for a majority of authors the two terms may be used as synonyms and that for some others "building shell" refers to the skeleton (structure) rather than the envelope of the building.

Soil suction is equal to a force per unit area that must be exceeded by an externally applied suction to initiate water flow from the soil. Soil suction is expressed in pounds per square inch.

Tensiometers measure soil tension. This is also often referred to as soil suction or vacuum. Soil tension is a measure of how tightly water is held in the soil, and is measured in pressure units of centibars(cb) or kilopascals(kPa). These are equivalent units. One hundred centibars equal approximately 15 psi. Soil tension increases as moisture in the soil is depleted. This force also draws water out of the tensiometer through its porous tip, creating a vacuum inside the tensiometer. This negative pressure, or tension, is registered on the tensiometer vacuum gauge. The soil tension measured with tensiometers is an indirect indication of soil moisture content and can be used as an indicator of irrigation need.

The OWC [oscillating water column] operates similar to a blow hole. It is a chamber of air closed above the surface and open underwater. As the water rises and falls outside the chamber, the water column inside the chamber oscillates, blowing out and drawing in the trapped air through a turbine. The compressible air acts as a buffer, and the OWC' s design and operation are simple.

STEP : Satellite Test of the Equivalence Principle. Worden and Everitt have proposed to carry out an improved version of Galileo's Leaning Tower of Pisa experiment, by placing masses of different composition inside a satellite orbiting the Earth to obtain a long duration of free fall. Very high positional sensitivity can be achieved by cooling the experiment to 1. 8 K and using SQUIDs to detect in current changes in magnetic pickup coils. The test masses of different materials and the position measuring equipment are placed inside the satellite and micro Newton thrusters are used to cancel the small accelerations of the satellite due to air drag, radiation pressure and the solar wind which could couple to masses.

One important aspect of the physics of stars is the way in which radiation generated inside is transported out-it can alter the temperature and pressure of the star, and affect the distribution of mass within. At the same time, radiation transport affects the excitation and ionization of atoms in the star, which in turn affects the way in which radiation is transported. Ionization also makes extra electrons available, and so radiation transport, and the details of photo-excitation, ultimately has an impact on the equation of state of the star-the relationship of temperature, density and pressure.
