Solar heating is heat created by the energy of the sun. Solar heat can be either active or passive. Passive solar heating, as the name suggests, takes advantage of the heat created through natural means(heat created when sunlight passes through a window and becomes trapped inside a building). Custom ski leg with knee joints - a ski leg with two knee joints was designed for an above-knee skier. One knee joint was for walking, and the other for skiing. When the leg is used for skiing, the upper knee joint is locked and the lower knee joint is used - controlled by a compression spring - as it keeps the leg in the flexed position required for skiing. With the amputee’s weight on the coil spring, the ski knee can flex as the amputee goes down the hill but will not collapse and buckle. An adjustable ankle to permit the foot to flex to keep the ski parallel to the hill when going down the slopes was also incorporated.

Advanced Gradient Heating Facility(AGHF)... The AGHF supports the production of advanced semiconductor materials and alloys using the directional solidification process, which depends on establishing a hot side and a cold side in the sample(a temperature gradient). It provides an extremely stable temperature environment of up to 1, 400°C, high-temperature gradients of up to 100°C/cm in the solidification zone, slow movement of the gradient across a sample to provide slow growth rates, efficient cooling through the use of a liquid metal cooling ring attached to the sample container, and Peltier pulse marking capability. The AGHF consists of three modules mounted in one side of a Spacelab double rack : the Core Facility Module contains the processing chamber with the furnace inside; the Electronics Module contains the controls and equipment necessary to operate the furnace; and the Gas Storage Module contains argon for chamber repressurization and sample cooling.

There is... an international standard called "High Sierra" format, or ISO 9660, for the storage of plain data on CD-ROMs, but there are unfortunately two standards for the compressed data. One standard is called CD-I(Compact Disk-Interactive) and is supported by Philips and Sony, whereas the other standard is called DVI(Digital Video Interactive) and is supported by Intel and IBM. Both standards are similar in allowing slightly more than one hour of video on a CD-ROM, but they are otherwise quite different. CD-I is designed as a stand-alone system that is intended to be sold as a consumer electronics appliance for the home. A CD-I machine is self-contained with its own computer hidden inside. Users do not see the computer, however, but only the nice video images on their television screens, so CD-I may appeal to the "compuphobic" part of the population. CD-I does come in a computer-oriented format also, called CD-XA(Extended Architecture).

A new device, developed in Norway, harnesses energy from the ocean waves using a vertically oscillating float connected to a piston pump. Possible applications range from desalination of seawater and clean water supply to fish farms, to electricity production using a turbo-generator. This wave energy conversion unit is being developed by the Norwegian company ConWEC AS... The ConWEC device absorbs wave energy by means of a float which oscillates up and down inside a cylindrical structure with a submerged opening through which waves can act. The energy in the waves is converted to mechanical energy by a pump with its piston rigidly connected to the float. Seawater can be pumped into an energy storage in the form of a pressure tank(or possibly an elevated water reservoir) from which a turbine can be run to complete the conversion to electrical energy.
