INSIDE STRAP [4 records]

Record 1 2011-05-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Horse Racing and Equestrian Sports
DEF

Strap strung inside shafts of sulky to keep the horse swinging the rear end to the right and left and traveling sideways on its gait.

CONT

Gaiting straps are put on a horse to keep his rear end in line. I’ve put them on trotters on both sides. Sometimes they’ll throw their feet out pretty wide into a wheel or the sulky, particularly on a half-mile track where they’re going at a terrific clip around the turns. A lot of good horses that I’ve raced had to wear gaiting straps over a half-mile track. A gaiting strap catches them up along the stifle and keeps them from throwing their foot out.

OBS

A term used in harness racing.

Subject field(s)
  • Orbital Stations
CONT

... the Waste Collection System(WCS) operates differently from the facilities on Earth. The WCS comprises a commode, a urinal, fan separators, and an odor and bacterial filter. To keep bodies from floating away due to weightlessness, astronauts fasten a seat belt-like strap or lower a bar over their legs and wedge their feet into footholds. Space toilets flush with air instead of water, and the fan helps separate liquids from solids. Liquids are purified and recycled for re-use, just as they are on Earth. Plastic bags inside the commode collect wastes, and are sealed and stored. The WCS also has storage areas for towels, wash cloths, urinal funnels, wet and dry wipes, tissues, disposable gloves, and trash bags.

OBS
