CONT

A careful balance is needed between the amount of rosin required to provide sufficient biocide release and the quantity of the other film-forming components used to make the coating tough and durable. As the rosin content increases the binder system becomes softer and more soluble in seawater whereas a low rosin content makes the binder system virtually insoluble and hard. Antifoulings which are softer and more soluble are known as “controlled depletion polymer”(CDP) or soluble matrix antifoulings, whereas the hard types are known as insoluble matrix or “contact leaching” antifoulings.

Key term(s)
  • controlled depletion polymer anti-fouling
  • CDP anti-fouling
  • controlled solubility copolymer anti-fouling paint
  • controlled depletion polymer anti-fouling paint

CONT

Key term(s)
  • peinture antisalissure à base de polymère à épuisement contrôlé
  • peinture antisalissure à matrice soluble

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
CONT

The purification system has two tasks. First, it must remove insoluble and soluble corrosion products and other impurities from the moderator water. Secondly it must remove unwanted neutron absorbing chemicals(called poisons), used for reactor regulation.

CONT

If this circulating crud is not removed from the HTS [heat transport system], subsequent neutron activation and re-deposition will create radiological problems in the HTS (increased man-rem). An increased purification flow will remove much or all of these products. But, the removal of these materials in the purification circuit will result in high radiation fields around the filters, strainers and IX columns.

CONT

CONT

Contact Stabilization. Microorganisms consume organics in the contact tank. Raw wastewater flows into the contact tank where it is aerated and mixed with bacteria. Soluble materials pass through bacterial cell walls, while insoluble materials stick to the outside. Solids settle out later and are wasted from the system or returned to a stabilization tank. Microbes digest organics in the stabilization tank, and are then recycled back to the contact tank, because they need more food. Detention time is minimized, so the size of the contact tank can be smaller. Volume requirements for the stabilization tank are also smaller because the basin receives only concentrated return sludge, there is no incoming raw wastewater. Often no primary clarifier before the contact tank due to the rapid uptake of soluble and insoluble food.

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement des eaux
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

Fermentation system in which the product is continuously removed by extraction with a solvent that is insoluble in water, not harmful to the organism, simple to recover(e. g., by distillation) and in which the fermentation product is considerably more soluble than it is in water. The fermenter may be fed nutrient continuously or intermittently.

OBS

One advantage of this type of reactor is that products may be removed before they reach concentrations that limit the rate of fermentation by feedback inhibition. The disadvantage is that few, if any, solvents with the required properties have been identified.

DEF

A system to divert streamflow past a point where a hazardous material which sinks or forms an insoluble precipitate on contact with water has been spilled. The system consists essentially of pumps and piping.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'eau
  • Mesures antipollution
DEF
