In addition to inspections by employees, the condition of rolling stock is also checked using a network of wayside inspection systems(WISs) and wheel impact load detectors(WILDs) placed along the tracks. WISs include dragging equipment detectors and hot box and hot wheel detectors. WILDs measure the impact load generated by each wheel of a car and identify wheels with flats, and wheels whose running surface exhibits shelling or spalling, is out-of-round or is affected by an excess of metal. ... a spectroscope or spectrograph... are effectively the same thing except that a spectroscope is simply used for visual inspection(that is, your eye is the detector), while a spectrograph includes some means(photographic film or an electronic detector) for recording the spectrum for analysis. In professional astronomy these days there is very little need for a spectroscope... a spectrograph in its simplest form,... is a light-tight box with a small(often narrow rectangular or adjustable) opening to let light in, a grating to break the light into its components, and a "detector" of some kind placed at the proper angle and distance from the grating to record the spectrum of the wavelength range of interest. The first CANPASS project underway was CANPASS-Highway. The CANPASS-Highway program will eventually be a national version of the PACE(Peace Arch Crossing Entry) project in B. C. which combines pre-approval processing, express lanes, a self-declaration card, and an automated billing system to speed up border crossings. Currently PACE users, for a $25 annual fee, receive a special windshield decal authenticity. Users deposit declaration cards in a box at the inspection booth before proceeding. Duties are charged to a credit card. Approximately 60, 000 vehicles use the PACE express lane to ensure that only approved travellers use it, and that those who do comply with the terms and conditions of the program. If users don’t comply, their privileges are withdrawn and appropriate penalties applied. Until now the CANPASS-Highway system for pre-approved travellers has been available only at four border crossings in British Columbia. Dans le cadre du projet actuel, les participants au projet PACE disposent, pour 25 $ par année, d'une vignette spéciale pour leur pare-brise et utilisent les voies spéciales où les douaniers vérifient visuellement l'authenticité de la vignette. Les participants déposent les cartes de déclaration dans une boîte située au poste d'inspection avant de poursuivre leur route. La carte de crédit des participants est débitée des frais de douanes. Il y a environ 60 000 véhicules par mois qui utilisent la voie rapide du projet PACE économisant jusqu'à 90 p. 100 du temps qu'il faut normalement pour franchir la frontière. Cette voie spéciale est surveillée par des inspecteurs douaniers de manière que seuls les voyageurs autorisés l'utilisent et que les utilisateurs respectent les modalités du programme.
