Its major continuing task is helping to ensure the maintenance of public order... It also deals with such matters as immigration and naturalization, civil defense, aliens, certain safety regulations, the care of children deprived of normal home life, election administration, control of dangerous drugs, inspection of local fire services, liquor licensing, etc. Prison administration [in 1963] became a direct responsibility of the Home Office. The Metropolitan Police is headed by a commissioner who is answerable to the home secretary.
