The application of free-flying space robots(FFSR) has achieved significant progress because of their ability to perform on-orbit servicing missions autonomously or telerobotically instead of human performing hazardous, monotonous and costly extra vehicular activities(EVA). Some applications of FFSR include inspection, repairing, assembling, refueling and docking with other spacecraft. As these tasks are dangerous for astronauts to perform in the space environment, space robots are expected to be utilized and therefore, a high level of accuracy is required for a successful mission.

Technological progress in space operations autonomy and robotics will disrupt the traditional paradigm of spacecraft design, acquisition, launch, operations, and maintenance. Within the next 5 to 10 years, routine spacecraft refueling could become a reality, and spacecraft low on propellant could avoid decommissioning and enjoy extended lifetimes. A new generation of cooperative spacecraft designed specifically for on-orbit servicing(OOS) could upgrade their own hardware every few years.... OOS refers to on-orbit activities conducted by a space vehicle that performs up-close inspection of, or results in intentional and beneficial changes to, another resident space object(RSO).

Earthworm robots fall in the broader class of bio-mimicking robots. The thrust for developing earthworm-like robots lies in the ability of an earthworm to venture through highly space constrict regions taking lesser amount of space for navigation. The robots inspired by earthworm's locomotion characteristics are very useful in applications such as search and rescue operations under debris, surveillance and spying, inspection and maintenance in pipelines and medical uses like endoscopy...

CONT

Earthworm-like robots are typically composed of a series of identical and radially symmetric segments that are actuated in specific wave patterns for high velocity or low cost of transport locomotion and which enable directional control.

Using the method of triangulation, 3D scanning is a process of determining the shape of an object's surface or its volume in three-dimensional space.... Accurate 3D measurements derived from a scanned object are useful for material inspection and quality control. If a 3D scanning technology is capable of collecting a lot of 3D data from the scanned object, it has the ability to recreate a high resolution, accurate 3D digital model of the real-world object.

We are developing a relatively simple, modular, low mass, low cost robot for space station EVA [Extra-Vehicular Activity] that is large enough to be independently mobile on the station exterior, yet versatile enough to accomplish many vital tasks. Because our design is for a robot that is independently mobile, yet capable of conventional manipulation tasks, we call it the Self-Mobile Space Manipulator or(SM) 2. The robot can perform useful tasks such as visual inspection, material transport, and light assembly. It will be able to work independently or in cooperation with astronauts, and other robots.

In 1979, Boeing and the US Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory proposed a small unmanned "Air-Launched Sortie Vehicle", ALSV consisting of a reusable spaceplane and a huge expendable propellant tank. Even today, a geostationary satellite, whose useful life has ended, must be abandoned in space. The experimental servicing satellite ESS applies robotics to resolve the problem of servicing a non-cooperative target in or near to a geostationary orbit, a region of space still out of reach to manned spaceflight. A three-month demonstration flight of ESS has been planned and all phases of its mission have been defined. These include the acquisition, inspection and servicing of an orbiting satellite through to parking it in a "graveyard" orbit. The project builds on the experience gained with the robotics technology experiment Rotex, flown on the D2 Mission.

Facility Building near the Vehicle Assembly Building at KSC [Kennedy Space Center] with two bays in which the Orbiter undergoes post flight inspection, maintenance, and pre-mate checkout prior to payload installation.

CONT

Immediately after landing, the orbiter is towed to the Orbiter processing Facility (OPF) located west of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The orbiter then undergoes safing procedures in the OPF which include removing residual fuels and explosive ordnance items. Then the orbiter’s previous mission payloads are removed and the vehicle is fully inspected, tested, and refurbished for its next mission. These functions require approximately two-thirds of the time between missions. The remainder is devoted to the installation and checkout of the payload for the next mission. Power-up testing of orbiter vehicles in the OPF are actually controlled from consoles in the Launch Control Complex (LCC) .
