Before 1878, at the time of the North-West Mounted Police (N.W.M.P.), all police ranks were constables, whereas the officers had military names borrowed from the Irish Constabulary. While the latter have remained, the Constable ranks have evolved: "Sub-Constable" corresponds to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) "Constable" of today, "Acting Constable" has become "Corporal"; "Constable" corresponds to "Sergeant," and "Staff Constable" to "Staff Sergeant." Officer ranks are no longer military ranks after 1878. All ranks are now police ranks. 1, record 13, English, - Constable

Record number: 13, Textual support number: 2 OBS
1, record 13, French, - gendarme
