At present, electrical reserve capacity is 18-20% of installed capacity compared with 5-7% reserve capacity prior to 1991. Approximately 30% of this installed capacity is in need of major reconstruction or replacement. The availability of reserve capacity to cushion demand and the current lull in the economy create an excellent opportunity to upgrade and/or construct new power generation capacity.

In Europe, three countries, Germany, Greece and Austria stand out from the rest, alone representing 74. 3% of the solar collector surface installed as of today. Germany is in first place with a total of 2 630 000 m2 at the end 1998. Since 1991, the date which marked the real boom in thermal solar power in Germany, the country has experienced literally no interruption in the pace of its domestic market. For all of the 1990s, the average annual growth rate for surfaces installed in Germany has been 30%. Greece, with 2 493 000 m2 of installed solar collectors, has risen to second place in Europe... Among the other E. U. countries, France posts a total capacity of 654 600 m2 of solar collectors installed. If the surfaces installed in the different countries are expressed in terms of the number of inhabitants, then the hierarchical order observed in Table 1 is completely changed... Germany disappears from the group of frontrunners, where only Austria and Greece remain.

L'Allemagne disparaît du groupe de tête où seules restent l'Autriche et la Grèce.

Depuis 1989, ce marché augmente selon une moyenne de 18 % par an. En 1997, environ un million de m2 de capteurs ont été fabriqués en Europe pour une surface totale installée dépassant les sept millions de m2, réalisés en majeure partie avec des capteurs plans vitrés.

All types of generation have an installed capacity and an operational capacity. The installed capacity shows the maximum power that a machine can operate at. The operational capacity is the average capacity that is obtained across a year, and will depend on the site and how generation devices are used. For example, modern wind turbines have installed capacity of 1MW and above.

[By] convention it may be derived from the energy produced during a certain period which for statistics it is necessary to define (the ratio of the electricity produced to the operating period). The power produced may be gross or net.
