The POLDER(Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances) instrument will observe the polarization, directional and spectral characteristics of the solar light reflected by aerosols, clouds, oceans and land surfaces. POLDER is a push broom, wide field of view, multi-band imaging radiometer/polarimeter developed by CNES. Multi-angle viewing is achieved by the along-track migration at the spacecraft velocity of a quasi-square footprint intercepted by the total instantaneous 114-degree wide field of view. This footprint is partitioned into 242x274 elements of quasi-constant 7kmx6km resolution, imaged by a CCD matrix in the focal plane.

Gyroscopes are made of a solid body with high angular velocity around an axis of symmetry... which induces a high angular stability in presence of perturbations. Such a device is used to preserve a fixed inertial orientation, while the rest of the system in in motion. It must be noted that both devices provide an information about angular velocity. The first device output is the instantaneous angular velocity, while the second device output is the integration of the angular velocity during a period of time. Angular position information can be computed from gyrometers output by integration, while angular velocity information can be computed from gyroscopes output by derivation.
