The First Sea Lord is quite different from the First Lord of the Admiralty. The Sea Lords were the top ranking professional naval officers assigned to the Board of Admiralty. The First Sea Lord, or ISL, is a collateral title of the Chief of Naval Staff, the uniformed head of the Royal Navy.

High data rate intersatellite communications will be needed in applications such as short range links between clusters of satellites in one or adjacent orbital slots, medium range links forming a network in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) constellations, and longer links between GEO (Geostationary Orbit) satellites. This requires optical intersatellite links or satellite to ground communications links with digital data transfer at 10 Gbps at ranges of 10 000 kilometres.

Optical intersatellite links offer higher data rates than microwave alternatives. There is no requirement for spectrum approval and interference threats are minimal with laser communications.

Philips has now combined the speed and low power of Schottky TTL and the high packing density of I2L in a new type of logic structure called integrated Schottky logic(ISL). This new technology has been used in the 8A1200 gate array which is masked to customers’ requirements. The array contains 52 Schottky buffers for high fan-out, 36 I/O cells and 1144 gates.
