The smaller Japanese cedar longhorn beetle, Callidiellum rufipenne, was found in Milford Connecticut in 1998 in a live arborvitae branch, Thuja occidentalis "Emerald green". This beetle is native to China, Japan and Korea where it usually attacks dead, weakned or freshly cut trees. This beetle has been found in about a half dozen species of apparently healthy nursery stock as well as infesting native eastern red cedar, Juniperus virginiana.

A globular or kidney-shaped gall produced on twigs of species of Juniper ("Cedar") by a rust fungus having an alternate stage on a Rosaceous host.

Cedar-apple rust, caused by the fungus gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae, is a distinctive disease which is indigenous and widespread throughout the northeast in areas where apples, crabapples, and other related members of the Rose family grow in close proximity to Juniperus species such as eastern red cedars and junipers.
