Subject field(s)

CONT

kaleidoscope : optical device consisting of mirrors that reflect images of bits of coloured glass in a symmetrical geometric design through a viewer.... The mirrors are enclosed in a tube with a viewing eyehole at one end. At the other end is a thin, flat box that can be rotated... Some kaleidoscopes dispense with the object box and use a lens to throw images of distant objects on the mirrors, an eyepiece at the viewing eyehole then being an advantage.

DEF

A slight turn of a kaleidoscope when you’re looking through it and you get a different view of things. The image changes. DEF

The ability to challenge traditional assumptions and define new patterns and possibilities.

CONT

Greater commitment and enhanced ability to implement decisions and strategies are the natural consequence of participative planning. So is the increased portfolio of innovative ideas. By bringing together a mixture of people with different perspectives and through the use of consensus-building methodologies one allows for the emergence of what is called "Kaleidoscope thinking"-the ability to challenge traditional assumptions and define new patterns and possibilities.

OBS

The definition and the context are taken from Winning through Participation: Meeting the Challenge of Corporate Change with the Technology of Participation, by Laura Spencer, Dubuque, Iowa, 1989.
