The Return to Launch Site(RTLS)... abort mode is designed to allow the return of the orbiter, crew and payload to the Kennedy Space Center launch site, approximately 25 minutes after lift-off. The RTLS profile would accommodate the loss of thrust from one main engine between lift-off and approximately four minutes and 20 seconds, at which time not enough MPS propellant remains to return to the launch site. An RTLS would also be used if a time-critical failure occurred that required the earliest possible landing, such as a cabin leak or major cooling system failure.

The Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module(MPLM), built by the Italian Space Agency(ASI), is the second of three such pressurized modules that will serve as the International Space Station's "moving vans", carrying laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments and supplies to and from the International Space Station aboard the space shuttle. Construction of ASI's Raffaello module was the responsibility of Alenia Aerospazio in Turin, Italy. Raffaello was delivered to Kennedy Space Center from Italy in July 1999 by a special Beluga cargo aircraft. The cylindrical module is about 6. 4 meters(21 feet) long and 4. 6 meters(15 feet) in diameter. It weighs about 9, 000 pounds(almost 4. 1 metric tons). It can carry up to 20, 000 pounds(9. 1 metric tons) of cargo packed into 16 standard space station equipment racks. Although built in Italy, Raffaello and two additional MPLMs are owned by the U. S. They were provided in exchange for Italian access to U. S. research time on the station.

Circuit of electric field measurements of thunderclouds. ... The electric field mill is a device based on electrostatic induction. It consists of one or two electrodes which either rotate in an electrostatic field or become periodically exposed to a field by rotating vanes. Fig.46 illustrates a cylindrical field mill which consists of two cylinder halves that are electrically insulated from each other. An electric motor rotates the two halves in the electric field to be measured so that they become alternately exposed to both the positive and negative direction of the field. The result is that an alternating (ac) signal is generated across the two halves which can be easily amplified. ... Although not commonly used, the cylindrical field mill has the advantage that when mounted in a fixed position it can also indicate the direction of the field. This is accomplished by measuring the phase shift of the ac signal relative to the orientation of electric fields need to be measured.

CONT

The device normally used to measure atmospheric electric fields is a type of sensor called an electric field mill. It can be used on the ground to gain information about the field aloft, or it can be flown on an airplane or balloon. Thirty-one ground-based field mills at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and the Kennedy Space Center are used to measure the electric field just above the surface of Earth, in the lowest meter of the atmosphere, and determine if it meets the safety levels specified in the Lightning Launch Commit Criteria. The small, cylindrical field mill is mounted upside down.

The US space shuttle delivers the third port truss segment, the P5 Truss, to attach to second port truss segment, the P3/P4 Truss.

CONT

This truss segment, called "S5, "is a mirror image of the P5 truss segment that arrived for processing at Kennedy Space Center in July 2001. The S5 truss segment is a 10-1/2-by-15-foot aluminum structure that will weigh 3, 900 pounds when fully processed... Items to be attached to the S5 truss include handholds to be used by spacewalking astronauts, a strut assembly, multi-layer thermal blankets, and the installation of the PVRGF.

CONT

The P5 and S5 segments are merely spacers that will provide enough room for the solar arrays to track the sun and not interfere with the other equipment, for example, the waste-heat radiators and antennas. The waste-heat radiators attached to segments S1 and P1 also must be clear of array movement.

OBS

The assembly sequence of the trusses on the International Space Station does not usually correspond to the number assigned to each segment of the struss structure. Trusses are numbered as follows: P1, P3, P4, P5, P6 (port side) and S1, S3, S4, S5, S6 (starboard side). In this case, the P5 truss is referred to as the third port truss segment.

Facility Building near the Vehicle Assembly Building at KSC [Kennedy Space Center] with two bays in which the Orbiter undergoes post flight inspection, maintenance, and pre-mate checkout prior to payload installation.

CONT

Immediately after landing, the orbiter is towed to the Orbiter processing Facility (OPF) located west of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The orbiter then undergoes safing procedures in the OPF which include removing residual fuels and explosive ordnance items. Then the orbiter’s previous mission payloads are removed and the vehicle is fully inspected, tested, and refurbished for its next mission. These functions require approximately two-thirds of the time between missions. The remainder is devoted to the installation and checkout of the payload for the next mission. Power-up testing of orbiter vehicles in the OPF are actually controlled from consoles in the Launch Control Complex (LCC) .

A Crew Equipment Interface Test(CEIT)... The CEIT is a test conducted two to three months prior to a shuttle launch. Astronauts who will be the on-orbit users of the flight hardware verify that there are no interface problems between that hardware and the astronaut users. Astronauts are mostly trained at Johnson Space Center, whereas the flight hardware is located at Kennedy Space Center. The CEIT provides the astronauts with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the flight hardware. During this test, fit checks are made between flight hardware that have not yet been verified. Fit checks with EVA tools and hardware planned to be handled during EVA are also conducted. Training that is difficult to conduct using mockups are also conducted.
