KINETY [3 records]

Record 1 1979-02-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Zoology
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
DEF

A row of basal granules of cilia connected by a protoplasmic fibril or kinetodesma.

CONT

Ciliata.... The functional units of the locomotor apparatus are linear groups of cilia typically oriented in meridional rows. The individual cilia are anchored in sub-pellicular basal granules(kinetosomes), each row of which in turn is interconnected, or at least accompanied, by a fibril(kinetodesma). Each of these functional units is called a kinety; the aggregate of granules and fibrils comprises the infraciliature.

CONT

CONT

There are 2 circumoral and 1 pre-oral kineties, and a continuation of the last forms the strongly ciliated seam towards which the kineties of the left and right converge.

OBS

circumoral: surrounding the mouth.

OBS

Although the term "cystostome" exists in English (see WEBIN 1976, p. 568), authors seem to prefer to use "circumoral" rather than "circumcytostomal"; the latter was not found in any of the documents studied.

DEF
