Record 3 2017-06-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
  • Bones and Joints
DEF

A test of rupture of the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments of the knee. The knee can be subluxed anteriorly with external rotaion of the tibia, but the knee cannot be subluxed anteriorly with forced internal rotation of the tibia.

CONT

In Slocum’s test, the patient is positioned laterally with the healthy side down. The leg with the injured knee rests only on the medial side of the foot; the knee is unsupported. The examiner grasps the distal femur with one hand and the proximal tibia with the other and slowly flexes the knee. Again, a subluxation sign can be observed at about 30° flexion if anterior cruciate insufficiency is present.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Méthodes diagnostiques (Médecine)
  • Os et articulations
CONT

  • Symptoms (Medicine)
  • Musculoskeletal System
CONT

In the jerk test of Hughston, the examiner flexes the knee to about 60°, grasps and internally rotates the distal tibia, and with his other hand applies a valgus stress to the knee. He then gradually extends the knee, maintaining the internal rotation and valgus pressure. The femoral condyle remains behind the summit of the plateau until, at about 20-30° flexion, the tightening posterior structures of the popliteus corner pull the tibial plateau back, and the subluxation relocates with a jerk. This test is positive in essentially the same injuries as the lateral pivot shift test of McIntosh...

DEF

CONT

Dynamic stabilizers of the patella also control tibial rotation and patellar gliding. Thus, weakness or insufficiency of the VMO [vastus medialis obliquus] in participants with PFPS [patellofemoral pain syndrome] may contribute to abnormal lateral movement of the patella. This abnormal lateral movement may, as a compensatory mechanism, increase knee valgus and hip internal rotation and decrease knee flexion, which could influence the performance in the anterior directions of the SEBT [Star Excursion Balance Test] among those with PFPS.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Symptoms (Medicine)
  • Muscles and Tendons
  • Nervous System
DEF

Pain from the sciatic nerve.

OBS

Sciatica is described as burning or aching. Its distribution is typical; beginning in the buttocks it radiates downward in the posterior thigh and the posterolateral aspect of the calf; sometimes it extends around the lateral malleolus of the ankle and the outer aspect of the foot. The pain is intensified by coughing, sneezing, laughing, or the straining of defecation.

OBS

Sciatic nerve(L4, L5 and S1, S2, S3) : Can be injured with incorrect lithotomy positioning with knee extension and external hip rotation. There will be pain in the gluteal region radiating to the foot, inability of flexion of the leg.

  • Système nerveux
DEF

CONT

The standing throw starts with the athlete balanced over the rear foot, the shot nestled under the chin and positioned behind the right foot... From this position, the rotation begins with the right foot, proceeding upward through the knee and to the hips... The rotation continues through the trunk to the shoulders as the release action begins.

CONT

The legs, followed by the trunk and then the throwing shoulder, should initiate the stand throw ... Many throwers throw much farther in warm-ups with their stand throw than their full technique and then go on [to] use their full technique in the meet.

Passive hyperextension is characterized by automatic external rotation resulting in asymmetrical posterior lesions and tears of the PCL [posterior capsule ligament] at its femoral attachment. On the contrary, active hyperextension of the knee can produce ACL [anterior capsule ligament] injury by anterior translation of the tibia under the femur consecutive to Quadriceps femoris contraction.
