LASER COMMUNICATIONS [12 records]

Subject field(s)
  • Optical Telecommunications
DEF

A technology that uses light propagating in free space to transmit data between two points.

CONT

Free-Space Optics (also known as FSO, Wireless Optics or Optical Wireless) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, wireless optics communication systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser like is transtmited through the air (free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each wireless optics unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units.

CONT

The technology is useful where the physical connection of the transmit and receive locations is difficult, for example in cities where the laying of fibre optic cables is expensive. Free Space Optics is also used to communicate between space-craft, since outside of the atmosphere there is little to distort the signal. The optical links usually use infrared laser light, although low-data-rate communication over short distances is possible using LEDs [Light Emitting Diode]. IrDA [Infrared Data Association] is a very simple form of free-space optical communications. Distances up to the order of 10 km are possible, but the distance and data rate of connection is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions.

OBS

In Information Technology and Communications, IrDA refers to Infrared Data Association, a standard for communication between devices (such as computers, PDAs and mobile phones) over short distances using infrared signals.

CONT

These days, of course, not all aircraft need a pilot. This is an unmanned aerial vehicle called Orka, from the defense arm of European aerospace giant EADS. Onboard gear for the vertical-takeoff-and-landing drone could include day/night video cameras, laser sensors, electronic eavesdropping payloads or communications relay devices, the company says.

CONT

[The optical transmission project]... combines into optical communications systems the results from the semiconductor laser and optical fibre projects and those from the digital transmission programme. The first of these systems will be the ELO-34, an optical line system that will operate with the MCP-480(3rd order PGM multiplex).

  • Orbital Stations
CONT

High data rate intersatellite communications will be needed in applications such as short range links between clusters of satellites in one or adjacent orbital slots, medium range links forming a network in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) constellations, and longer links between GEO (Geostationary Orbit) satellites. This requires optical intersatellite links or satellite to ground communications links with digital data transfer at 10 Gbps at ranges of 10 000 kilometres.

OBS

Optical intersatellite links offer higher data rates than microwave alternatives. There is no requirement for spectrum approval and interference threats are minimal with laser communications.

NASDA will conduct a series of experiments with optical inter-orbit communications, in cooperation with the European Space Agency(ESA), using ESA's geostationary satellite, the Advanced Relay and Technology Mission Satellite(ARTEMIS). A high-power laser device, a high-gain optical antenna, and a highly sensitive signal detector are required for this experiment since the distance between OICETS and ARTEMIS is estimated to be up to 45, 000 kilometers.

The heterostructure laser. Heterostructures have been crucially important for the development of semiconductor lasers.... Alferov was the first to succeed in producing a lattice-adapted heterostructure(AIGaAs/GaAs, 1969) with clear borders between the layers. Alferov's research team succeeded in rapidly developing many types of components built up of heterostructures, including the injection laser which Alferov patented in 1963. A technological breakthrough occurred around 1970 when heterostructure lasers became able to work continuously at room temperatures. These properties have, for example, made fibre-optic communications practically possible.
