The laser gyro need not be mechanically dithered. The same result may be achieved by optical devices. A Faraday cell is a piece of crystal, which changes the phase of a light wave traveling through it as a function of an applied magnetic field. The effect is nonreciprocal. A light beam traveling in one direction is advanced in phase, while a light beam traveling in the other direction is retarded in phase. Reversing the magnetic field reverses the effect. Changing the phase of the light beam has the same effect on frequency as changing the path length. This scheme eliminates the vibration problem, but retains the random walk angular position error. 2, record 8, English, - random%20walk

3, record 8, French, - cheminement%20al%C3%A9atoire

In a ruby laser, a rod of ruby is irradiated with the intense flash of light from xenon-filled flashtubes. Light in the green and blue regions of the spectrum is absorbed by chromium ions, raising the energy of electrons of the ions from the ground state level to one of the broad F bands of levels. Electrons in the F bands rapidly undergo non-radiative transitions to the two metastable E levels. A non-radiative transition does not result in the emission of light; the energy released in the transition is dissipated as heat in the ruby crystal. 2, record 9, English, - non%2Dradiative%20tansition

... the useful life of a semiconductor laser depends on limiting the amount of current applied to the device. Several methods are employed. In one method further chemical elements are introduced into the crystal so that the active layer of the laser is between regions where the band gap is particularly wide. The resulting "heterostructure" has built-in energy barriers that help to prevent the diffusion of charged carriers out of the active layer. Stimulated emission can then be attained at relatively low values of applied current. 4, record 14, English, - heterostructure

1, record 14, French, - h%C3%A9t%C3%A9rostructure
